Default HELP! messed idle and high temps

my car developed a problem tonite. it idles at around 3300 "sometimes"...like whenever i clutch in it will go to 3300rpm on its own. also, ive noticed that the coolant temperature is affected by the revs and its really high...normally the needle sits at 1/3 but today the needle was flying from 1/2 to 3/4 depending on my revs...

i hope this is a vacuum leak or a busted thermostat or something...i dunno. any ideas?

Check the coolant level and bleed it first. Thermostat next. If that doesn't fix the problem, Replace that and then replace the thermo switch n the rad.

    i sure havent man.

yea see, this problem only crops up "sometimes" and i find that i sometimes can get rid of the high idle and the temperature problem by zinging the engine up to 7000rpm...

also, the engine likes to idle really high no matter what when its warming up. when i start it, it idles at around 2800rpm before i warms up, where it will settle down to an idle of somewhere between 1100-1500rpm.

if it's cold outside it's normal for the engine to idle a little high. from the sounds of your last post it goes back down to normal afterwards. was it doing this on other days? is it exceptionally cold today?

My car idles high in the winter, when I start it up in the morning, it idles at about 1600, and then goes down to 1100 after about 5 min.

In the summer it idles constantly at 1100.

I wonder if its the same thing except yours seems HIGH at like 3000RPM idle.

yea, but even after it warms up, it will suddenly jump up to 3300 for no reason...like whenever i clutch in or am in neutral.

could it also be that my air cleaner is fucken (i mean FUCKEN) dirty? i read somewhere that that could affect the idle..

well if the engine has to work alot harder to feed the thing with air, then your absolutely correct

but would that explain the weird 3000rpm idling and would it explain my temps running wild?

AND jsut today...while driving it, the engine would overheat if i revved higher than 2500....and the coolant was steaming out of the block itself and not the rad pressure cap.....so im guessing that the thermostat is fucked and its not sending coolant to the rad at all...argh!!! but where could coolant leak from the block? does this mean the head gasket is busted?

Have you done a compression test? Low compression in two adjacent cyls usually means a crack in the gasket between the two.
Do you get billowing white smoke at high RPMs?

Sounds like you need to flush the whole thing out a tthe same time. I'd lay odds the coolant passages in the block are blocked with crud.

yea, i did...it passed with flying colors!

i am reaaally hoping that its just a thermostat stuck closed and not a cracked headgasket/block

...but i think i need to take the car in to get it looked at. i dont have enough tools, garage space (its hard to do shit in the dark, cold parking lot), nor the experience to check the thermostat or to rip out the headgasket.
