The car doesn't have to have plates, but you will need to get a permit from your insurance company.

Get your insurance company to give you a temporary (or permanent if you can get one) pink slip for the car you're buying. Then take that and the bill of sale down to a registrar and ask for an "In Transit" permit. It only costs like $20 or something like that for a few days. Then you put the permit in the windshield and drive the car back.

No one is stopping you besides the law. A plate doesn't automatticly put insurance on your vehicle. It may seem like that but you still need to get insurance for it.

I was kind of wondering the same thing... Can I do the same if I am buying a car in B.C. and driving it back?

i had 12 hour insurance on my car when i first got it so i could take it to my school to do the brakes.

i called my insurance agent and told her i need to work on the brakes. and such. you faxed me a pink slip. it said i had liability on the car from 7:00am till 7:00pm that day and she just had me take my plate off of my car i was currently driving.

and she didn't charge me a thing.

yeah generally if you call the insurance company and explain exactly what you are doing they will cover that trip possibly a day or 2, then you are expected to call them back and either have it put back to your original car or have it wrote up for your new ride...
