I think you mean a dog-box or a crash-box.. no synchros at all, just a set of teeth that engage the gear next to them, much like a motorcycle transmission. here's a pic from a Yamaha R1 transmission.

note how #24 has 3 'nubs' on it that fit into gear #21, those nubs are the gear 'dogs' you can see the slots the dogs fit into on #26.
