Default Anyone know where I can get some plexiglass?

I need some plexiglass for a little project. I also need it to be cut, or suggestions for making a perfectly straight cut.

homedepot has it, use a dremel to cut out circular shapes its pretty easy, then just sand down the rough edges...u can use a saw to cut straight lines

Some glass shops carry it, you can also ask them to cut it to a specific dimension.

I need some thicker stuff, not the mm crap. Around 1/2 inch or so. I'll call around the glass shops today. Thanks.

Does anyone know if anywhere that sells plexiglass will actually cut it to the Size you need? i only need 18" x 18" at the most, and the sheets they sell at Home Depot/Revy are like 36" x 48", and they dont cut it down to size, you have to buy the whole sheet and there like $30 and up, so i only need like $10 worth of the stuff.....I'll try that acrylic concepts i guess tomorrow.

Don't know what size it comes in, I think they can cut it as well.

I'm not sure if the Home Depots are different near you, but the local one DOES sell 1/4 to 1/2 inch plexi & lexan. You have to buy certain sizes, but usually they offer a good selection.

I found that lexan is usually better (even tho its harder to cut) because plexi scratches SO easily!

My question is: Where do you go to get the stuff "shaped" (heated so that it is curved)? I tried shaping a sheet with a heat gun... the stuff wouldn't budge

thick plexi is very very expensive.

cutting is easy enough if you can handle a jigsaw and follow a line, just use bimetal blades, they go through plexi like a hot knife thro snow.

heating... good luck, lmao, the thicker it is, the longer its going to take for heat to soften it.
sorry, shouldnt laugh, but i have some old memories.
get a tub of water and put the plexi in there, then fill it with boiling water.
or put the plexi in a low heat oven.

you will likely be able to bend it, but itll probably have waves and distortion out the ass, so if you plan on being able to see through it, revise those plans.

if you wanna post exactly what you need to do, i can probably help you figure out a way to do it, or suggest a different plan of approach.

You should be able to shape it in the oven on low heat.

I made a "plexiglass" signal light lens for my celica a while back until I could find one to replace it. (left it on for about 2 years... ) Heated the plexiglass in the oven on low heat, then removed it (w/oven mitts) and then rolled it over a ball (I actually used a large orange...ghetto style..) while it was still hot to give it the shape I wanted. Worked great....and you could still see through it and no distortion.

Then held it in position until it cooled...

Found the directions on how to make it on some "toyota paseo" site, on how to make clear corners for the car....

use carbonfiber / fiberglass / and some foam

easy to do and looks good.

of course if you want the see-through part this isn't gonna work, but for james's intake 'hood' it should be easy.
