A good starter bike would be a smaller dual sport like a XR250L or a DR350. They are easy to ride and are not at all intimidating. If you drop it it won't cost nearly as much to fix as a sport bike or even a cruiser. Plastic is cheap compared to fancy cowlings. Plus you can go off road! You can get a pretty good DR350 for $3000.00 or less.

I got a mountain bike already, lol. So you're all saying some 250-300cc dual-purpose or dirt bike would be somethin good to start on eh?

for a sport bike, the kawi EX250 is good, but you'll find yourself wanting more. The 500 is a good starter

There's also lots of ~400 cc sport bikes from the late 80s, those are good starters too.

i agree with ranger, an older 400 or a new ninja500 or suzuki gs500 or buell blast.

there are a few others, but ive been outa bikes for a while now so im not sure whats still avaliable.

also, older 600s arent too bad, as long as you remember they still have 80 or 90 horses and can still turn you into a red streak on the pavement.

also, if you havent taken the riding courses, do so before you buy.
might just decide you dont really like riding that much.
