    Default painting wheels -clearcoat

    Clearcoat makes things shiny right?

I want to paint my wheels flat black but won't clearcoat make it all shiny? I don't want to skip the clearcoat, is there a special kind I can use, or should I just use the regular stuff and live with it?

I'm not sure if you are going for a flat look or a shiny finish. Even the dullest paints will shine after the clearcoat is applied. I paint a lot of wheels and bodywork for bikes, when I'm done I always have very shiny cardboard. Point is if you want a flat finish you will have to skip the clear. I suggest a gun metal or dark greay with clearcoat if you don't want gloss black. Hope this helps

Thanks, I'll just use clearcoat to be safe.

Can anyone tell me if enamel paint is safe to use??

They didn't have any wheel-paint colours that I liked, but I figure with enough coats and clearcoat, its all the same thing. I picked up some dupli-color flat black enamel paint. It says "Premium Interior/Exterior" but gives no clues as to what its meant for.

Don't know much about paint, so any help would be great.

    Thanks

if there rims you plan on holding on to for a while, i REALLY dont suggest using spray paint on them, powder coating them is the best and they can do any color you want. flat or not.

I plan on holding on to them for a long time. However I think I will change the colour sometimes.

I've seen good long-term results with painting, given proper prep and care.

Does powdercoating have to colour the entire rim? I am leaving the lip polished silver.

well most shops like alberta wheel repair can normally color what you want on the wheel and leave the rest un touched. so if you want to keep the lip polished im sure they can just powder coat the wheel and leave the lip

Ab Wheel does NOT powder coat wheels. They just paint them. I have asked them a couple times and they do not do it. So I had to get mine painted... I couldn't find a place to powder coat rims..

There are a few shops that will powdercoat. In the yellowpages, topgun is one of them.
I'm not interested in powdercoating them though. Maybe later.

Not to be rude but how do you think most colored wheels are done? Alot of them are painted (aftermarket and OEM). If done correctly (prep/right paint/etc.) it will last a long time.
