If you can't cough up the green for armored riding boots (and lets face it, sometimes you just can't), at least get something made of thick/strong leather, preferably without laces or with concealed laces. You want it to come over your ankles. Try for an engineer boot, or something like that.
But proper moto boots are designed to take impacts common to riding. Always better to use something purpose-built for the job.
Edit: I'll be using my steeltoes until I can afford some real boots.
