pixil would know better than me but most of the people I know working as MWD/LWD hands have a petroleum tech diploma or a different related education (ie. I have a comp sci background) combined with oil rig experience -- which is what I have.Originally posted by kaput
How much experience do you have to be making that much? And what's the shift like?
Different companies have different schedules but from what I know it really varies -- some do 2/1 (2 weeks on, 1 week off), 4/2, or just a few days off when the job is done, the latter is what I had roughnecking years ago.
Pixil has also been doing this longer so his day rate/salary would be much higher than what I would make -- I was told 70-80K in my first year. Friend of mine has been MWD'ing for a few years and he made 110K in 2004.

You'll never get the job for 2 months.. it takes 2 months to train or longer depending on the person.
I'd say that you need school or you have to know someone at the company. Most places have a 1 foot stack pile of resumes and they get like 20 calls a day.
Average that I work is 180-200 days a year. Yeah it sucks.. but I'm 22 and gonna have my house paid off by the time I'm 28. Then it's time to hit the office jobs.

Well give these places a call - Ask to speak with their MWD Manager - Phoenix Technology Services, Ryan Energy, Omni, Blackmax, Schlumberger Anadrill, Weatherford Dalen, Directional Plus, Focus Directional, Compass Directional, Continental, Baker Hughes. There's some more can't remember them all.
Big companies like to train you.. And this job takes the brain power of a monkey. So I'd stick with a smaller one and just go right out into the field.
Computalog is another.. sperry sun is pretty big.
Also forgot to say.. you'll need a fairly new truck like 01+ to work for smaller companies as they pay 75 - 85 cents a km. They may want you to consult so you need WCB coverage, liability ($1300 a year) and a LTD company ($200). I just drove 2000kms on a 9day job and got $1500 alone for that.. so the truck is easily paid for.
