i have 1 hour to find out 3 ways in which commercial and transportation sectors could be more energy efficient.

How bout alternative forms of energy? The c train is run off of wind power.
In mexico, mexico city is buying many air powered vehicles (they run off of compressed air)
More strict laws for emissions and maintenance.
Increased taxes on companies with larger enery consumption

other things:

Solar panels can pay for themselves
Rooms entered occasionally can have sensors equipped which turn the light on when they sense motion in the room (U of L has these)
Fluorescent lights consume much less energy as they are much more efficient than filament bulbs
Replacing older appliances with newer, more energy efficient ones
Thermostats with timers can set different temperatures for different times of the day (say 5 degrees at night, and kick up to 20 1 or 2 hours before the start of the work day)
Convert engines to use propane or natural gas
