    Default How to setup a password so people can't steal wireless internet

    Damn people in the condo complex are stealing our wireless internet. It slows down our systems and frustrates the hell out of me. How do I enable a password to prevent them from doing this? The computer using the wireless in our place is an apple, not sure if that makes a difference.
    Thanks for the help

    You should be able to set up a WEP key in your router. Check your router manual for instructions.

    if you've got a linksys
    type in 192.168.1.1 into your address bar and it'll lead you to the link sys configuration

    and then all you have to do is enter your username & password that you set up when you were configuring your router in the first place.

    and then set up a wep.

    if you haven't set up a password
    then the default password for linksys is admin

    Make sure you setup WEP encryption, and disable broadcast SSID.

    how do you know people are stealing it? you need to go to the config page to see if people are using your connection... if youre on shaw it can get dreadfully slow regardless.

    Standard WEP and disable Broadcast should do the trick. Add MAC filtering and you're pretty sure the only one using this.

    Only l33t hax0rs can get at it.

    Haha don't fix it - a bunch of our IT guys haven't paid for Shaw in a year because there's 4-5 wireless connections to choose from where they live.

    Setting up wireless without reading the manual is like building a wicked car then leaving it unlocked for people to borrow whenever they want.

    the best wireless is the kind that reaches onto the street, so I can pick it up on my laptop while parked in my car and get directions or something when I'm lost in SE Calgary.

    Last weekend my BlackBerry's internet was faster than SHAW. NOT worth the $50/month anymore.

    I have a 3 foot omni antenna, and a half-decent little wireless card with an antenna jack. I get internet wherever I want to. People who leave their wireless routers unsecured are great

    That said, I always get awesome rates on my shaw connection, usually 600kb/s+, worst I've ever gotten was about 250kb/s, and the best was 900 something (all of these are sustained numbers).

    Where's the config page?

    is that what the DHCP Active IP Table is, a listing of people on your wireless?

    Depends on the program. You have to set forward rules on your router that send certain port connections to your computer.

    So you would say:

    Port 8888 -> 192.168.8.mycomp : 8888
    Port 25000-25010 -> 192.168.8.mycomp : 25000-25010

    Every p2p program will have a firewall/ports section in the faq. If you have more than 1 pc you need a different group of ports for each one.
