White balance looks off on the first batch of flower pics and the car shot, unless that's what you were going for. #2 and #3 are too overexposed for my liking.

I dont see the noise you are refering to, but if you want to decrease noise you need to decrease your iso setting.

F is the F stop this depends on your lens on how far open it can be, the lower the number the more open it is, this allows you to take photo's in lower light situations without having a long shutter, high iso, or flash.

no, the iso depends on the lense... thas why people prefer f2.8 on zoom lenses because they can run f2.8 for the full range, but most low end zooms have something like for example F4-5.6 which means it is max f stop of 4 on the low end and 5.6 on the high end... with your cam it probably does not have a good fstop range as it is made as a P&S

    I would have to disagree.

ISO is completely independant of what lens you use. ISO is the films (ccd, cmos sensors) sensitivity to light. You increase the iso to get a faster shutter speed in low light conditions, or extremely fast sports captures, to avoit camera shake, blue, underexposure.

Most arrays are 100-200-400-800-1600-3200 (this is my cameras capability anyways) Sometimes cameras will offer a 50ISO, but being I have a professional grade D-SLR my sensor quality is is of the quality that it's not really neccessary, where as low end cameras show brutal grain at anything over 100ISO. (this is why you NEVER buy a camera based on Megapixels, but based on sensor quality. So many people get caught up in the megapixel hype..)

F Stop is how big your aperture is, allowing more or less light into the camera. The smaller the number, the larger the hole so to speak.

I think what you are mentioning as far as ISO and F number is that you need to bump up your cameras ISO to let in more light when you've already got your aperture open to it's largest. However when you are doing artistic photos, over and under exposure are sometimes desired, and as such, ISO and The ability of your lens to go to an uber low f/stop are no more dependant of each other than an apple growing on a tree cares about a tech stock broker on wallstreet.

As far as the photos go, and this is purely constructive as you said you want input, and it WILL help you take even better photos, because they arn't by all means bad, the white balance is totally off what should be normally seen, in day time photos, whites should be WHITE, not blue, not green, adds depth to the photo. It shows you were using a Canon G3 for these photos, with manual white balance. I definatly would have left it on auto white balance for pretty much all of them. This is of course my opinion, if this was the look you were going for thats fine. Try using a longer shutter speed with a smaller aperture on your night time car shots, adds clarity as well as sharper lines, and adds a staring effect to any light sources. This is nearly impossible to do however on low end digi cams as the lens are of such poor quality it cant perform this look.

I'll use some of my photos for examples. I always use manual feature on my camera, and white balances are usually manual also, however through experience and having a completely customizable set up, they generally turn out proper.

an example of decreasing the size of your aperture on darker shots for clarity:
8 second exposure, iso 100, f8, manual white balance.

With rolling shots, this is where you want to manipulate your aperture as well.:

Your car photo was at f2, and iso at 100, manual white balance, and 1/6th of a second, next time, try an f8, @ 5-6 seconds on the lowest iso you can, and use a tripod indefinatly if you arn't already.

As far as getting nice crisp BLACK on dark shots, this is 100% sensor quality. Low end ones will show grain, and black will look grey, kinda like using 8bit color on an old computer, looks like ass.

This is correct. Smaller the F number, the less area in view that is in focus.

You can get a used canon 300d/digital rebel for probably like $1000 easily. and thats what most entry level dlsr users get.

and the lens purely depends on your budget and what you are shooting, you can get lenses from a couple hundred dollars to tens of thousands.

That is exposure compensation/correction. When you set it lower that 0, you are under exposing the shot, making it appear darker. When you set it above 0, you are over exposing the shot, making it appear brighter. When you shoot in manual, that area will give you an idea of what the exposure is. When shooting in Av or Tv modes, you can set the exposure, and the other parameter will be adjusted accordingly so that you get that exposure.

    Hope that makes sense.

    Buy a used Canon Digital Rebel, a 50mm f/1.8, a 17-40 f/4L and a 70-200mm f/4L. Will cover MOST shooting aspects.

Could get all this for around 2000-2500 depending on if you find them used.

If you're looking for used stuff, I'd check out the Fred Miranda forums. Lots of goodies there. Personally, I don't mind purchasing used stuff. Most of the photographers tend to take very good care of their gear and can verify whether or not the copy of the lens is sharp.

The 50mm f/1.8 isn't just for night shots, however it's a fast enough lens that makes it pretty suitable for night time photos. It's a very popular lens, and will probably be the cheapest one you'll ever find.
