    Default SCN Photography tips

    Hey,

Just wanted to make a few suggestions. The show is a lights out event, so lighting isn't too cooperative, but when shot right, looks awesome. Photogs often complain about 'bad lighting' at the events so here's a suggestion:

-bring a tripod, for sure! use slower shutter.
    -good for cars
    - flash for models, fine.
-play around with white balance, per shot if you want to. lighting is contantly changing withing the venue, i.e. strobes here, moving lights there, hot vs. cold lights, etc.

    That's it, hope this helps.

    It's all good!

Just to build on what Amee said, a lot of cameras have a shutter release cable availible for them, ideal for low light situations cause you dont need to actually touch your camera to take the pictures (this reduces camera shake caused by touching the camera and makes your pictures that much clearer)

If you take enough lower light or long exposure pictures, it's a very good investment

For sure. Good alternative for most, just use the camera's self-timer, set it to like 2sec or so, and hope nobody walks into your shot!

(haven't had my coffee either, i'm out)

    thanks for the tips.
even though i'm not an all out photographer as some others on beyond, i had trouble getting decent pictures at the last scn because of the lighting.
hope to have better ones this time around haha

Ugh, nothing makes me cringe more than people with point and shoot cheapie digicams using the flash at car shows for cars, gotta love that picture of a grainy fender and dirty wheel well eh?

    haha

Amee has outlined some useful tips for shooting indoors under that type of lighting, in addition, building on what Amee mentioned, is that I find the most valuable tool to bring out the proper, more pleasing colors is adjusting your white balance accordingly to allieviate the yellow tinge. Those of you fortunate enough to have cameras with the ability to tune by kelvin will appreciate this even more.

Also adjust your aperture for maximum image clarity, to achieve desired depth of field and lighting effects. Really adds to the shine of the car when done properly, and the background ambient lighting/features appear better too, staring reflections and lighting.

Oh, and yes, dont feel like a dork lugging around a tripod, may look strange, and people might look at you and think "what a dork" but whatever, they wont be saying that when they see your photos.

    Happy Shooting.

Night shots can STILL be done with "crappy digicams".. I use to have an Canon A60, and 90% of my pics were in dark situations...

Just gotta play with the features your camera gives you...

What sort of setup is best for SCN, using a low end digital camera (ie Canon S200)

Use a tripod and the self-timer on 2 second duration in lieu of a cable release. Shoot in the highest res possible.

Yeah, for lower-end cameras (like, say....mine ) a tripod is invaluable. I found that my camera (Toshiba PDR-3300) took incredibly shafty pictures in low-light level conditions. I picked up a tripod, it made a huge difference. I look like a total geek (big tripod, tiny camera), but the shots look a lot better. I pretty much never take my camera anywhere without my tripod these days!

LOL, calm down, that wasn't an attack on people with cheap cameras, those of you whom remember, I did 2 years worth of shows with a canon S200, it's all in how you use it. With cheap cameras, they have gobbs of grain when you use the flash in the dark, and tend to focus improperly, I learned this. No Flash, plain and simple, I'm offering FREE beneficial advice for people to possible help their "memories" turn out better, thats all . Bring a Tripod, or use a steady hand.

    Christ people are edgy lately.

Check out my website if you like. Anything before 2004 was Canon S200.
