you guys are talking about the desktop so use whatever you want

youre best off just starting xemacs from a menu. most window managers will let you do that.
haha, googe is correct. but, heres another suggestion.. do the following:

    cat > myxemacs
    #!/bin/sh
    xemacs &
    CTRL-D
    chmod 755 myxemacs
    ./myxemacs

    Theeeere you go :-P

    Default .

Seems to work for me, ran it from xterm..

    bash-3.00# uname -a
    Linux zaurus 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix #1 2004 21:20:29 +0000 armv5tel unknown

Run it, exit from xterm, still goes.. do a ps in a new xterm, and I still see the process, along with the window..

    Different for you?

i can read just fine, maybe you should have said "linux is insecure when i default install outdated versions and leave everything open" if you meant "YOUR" machine. cause your claim was that linux is insecure, period.

Ofcourse there is a shitload of vulns, but the funny part is, Shaw Calgary is always being scanned and exploited Linux,Unix,Windows, whatever, and the interesting part is FreeBSD 4.8 AND 4.7 have NEVER been comprimised, ports open all over etc.. etc.. so that just goes to show. My linux box I had online, buddy had me rooted within 15 minutes, didnt even know until he showed me. That just goes to show.

Yes KDE isn't APART of Linux, but if you read it again

Go loadup a standard RedHat, Debian, Knoppix, etc.. install

    WOW there look, FUCKING KDE!!.
dont you remember the part where we agreed that linux doesnt mean redhat? load up gentoo, debian (no it doesnt use kde), slackware, ubuntu, arch, hmm "wow there look, no kde". some distros are more based on it by choice, but that doesnt speak for linux as an operating system.

you dont have to get upset. just understand that kde has nothing to do with linux specifically. it was designed as a replacement for CDE, which was widely used long before linux even existed.

if you got rooted in 15 minutes youre apparently pretty new to linux though i guess. yes ill agree that in most cases a default linux install with the "friendly" distros probably wont last as long as a freebsd one, though none of the semi-recent distros have any remote holes. you should never put default installs of anything wide open on the internet anyways.

word to the comment about this being like the special olympics

And what part of the OS controls processes? Oh wait, not the kernel?

Anyways the real solution is to use 'nohup':
(nohup -- invoke a command immune to hangups)

    nohup xemacs &

No 15 minutes was a test, threw it online, went on IRC with the buddies and gave them the IP, didn't wait for someoen to try and scan it and get in I just let them go at it, what we used to do when we were bored, and it didn't take long thats forsure.

Sure KDE doesn't have anything DIRECTLY related to Linux but it is Related to Linux Unix BSD whatever you run, lets leave it at that.

yes, thats a better way to do it...but it will lower the scheduling priority which can be undesireable depending on what youre doing. probably wont be noticeable in most cases though (certainly not with a text editor)
