Post State of Emergency in Calgary

City is evacuating some residents along low lying areas by Elbow River. Didn't catch all the neigbourhoods. Hope the rains stops soon

It doesn't normal rain this much in the summer here? or is it just because it's all at once?

^^ We've gotten almost double the amount of rain just this june than we normally get in the entire year. This is all a freak never ending rainstorm. We havent seen anything like this since pretty much exactly 10 years ago.

that's crazy. You'd think that the last time it got bad like this they would have made some changes to the drainage to compensate for the rain so that it wouldn't happen again. I know last year when I was living near Edmonton and we got flooding they made some changes. Driving on the dearfoot last night was pretty crazy though... everyone going really slow...

yah...10 years ago it was pretty much the same as this
its pretty crazy how much rain has fell

most places in the NE havent had any problems...ive heard of the worst happening in the south west and north west
one of my friends in evergreen said they shutdown some roads cuz the water on the roads was a few feet deep and that was from one day of rainfall...

pretty scary stuff seeing the rivers up so high and what not.

    anyways stay safe everyone!

if only the rain was like beyond, we'd have an administrator/moderator to ban it when it gets annoying

If anybody is interested - here's the citybeat:

    -----------------------------------------------------------------
CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    Affected Communities

Pursuant to Section 21 of the Disaster Services Act (R.S.A.
2000 ch. D-13) and Section 4 of The City of Calgary Bylaw
25M2002, a state of local emergency has been declared in the
    City of Calgary effective 6:20 p.m., 2005 June 18.

Because of a predicted flood on the Elbow River, and under
the authority of this declaration, The City of Calgary will
be evacuating around 1,500 residents in low-lying areas of
the following communities along the Elbow River.

    Elbow Park
    Erlton
    Mission
    Rideau Park
    Riverdale
    Roxboro
    Stanley Park
    Victoria Park

This is not an evacuation order for all residents of these
communities. Calgary Police will contact affected residents
directly by going door to door.

If you reside in low-lying areas along the Elbow River, you
should take the following actions in case you are evacuated:

Call your family together to decide what you will take.

Pack enough clothes, prescription medicine, personal
identification and other essential items to last at least a
few days, including requirements for your pets.

If it’s safe, please shut off your gas appliances at the
valve (i.e. water tank, stove, hot water furnace). If you
don’t have access to the valve, then shut off the valve at
the gas meter, which may be inside or outside your home.

Please turn off all electrical appliances (i.e. Computer, TV,
microwave), then shut off the main breaker panel.

When departing, please lock your homes. City Police will
provide security. Anyone unauthorized in an evacuated area
    will be arrested.

If you were able to turn your power and gas off prior to
leaving, please leave a note on your front door to advise
    City crews.

Evacuees who cannot arrange their own accommodation will be
provided with food, shelter, bedding and other essential
services at the following reception centre. If you have
pets, they as well can be accommodated at SAIT.

    SAIT 1301 16 Ave NW
Enter off 14th Ave – use west and north doors
    In the Atrium
Free Public Parking Lot 3 and Lot 6

If you do not have your own means of transportation to the
reception centre, you will be evacuated by City buses. The
City will also transport residents who require special
    attention.

If you are enquiring about individuals in a reception centre
or wanting to register as an evacuee on a voluntary basis,
please call the Red Cross registration centre at 541-6100.

Information updates will be made through media outlets and
    the reception centre.

    ...

Good luck to everybody affected... pretty crappy way to spend a Saturday night.

Changes? For the better? Make decisions? Spend money?
I don't think the city knows those terms.
