    Default CHeck break lights?

My 98 540i keeps saying check brake lights on the OBC, I have changed the bulbs out even though the originals were working, and also i wiggled the connection and connecting wires to see if there was something loose. MY breaks and bulbs are working fine. Does anyone have any idea what else could be causing this message.

Check your brake fluid reservoir, it probably just needs to be topped up. Happened to me before on my 540 as well.

EDIT: My bad, assumed it was the emergency brake light.

Check the map itself on the taillight housing where the bulb and socket plug into the taillight, if the map is corroded where the bulb and socket make contact you may need a whole new taillight assembly

if your brake lights work, chances are it's your brake switch at the pedal

    there are two switches
one when fails, it throws the light on even though the brakes will still work

Im a idiot, the middle brake light was burnt out. I totally forgot about it although the rear lights were also giving me grief to so i cleaned the contacts on the bulb and socket--- so far so good. Thanks again
