    Default Alberta GDL License

Has anyone taken the Advanced Road Test? How did it differ from the regular road test? Are there any real advantages to getting GDL removed, as I don't really care about not being able to drink and drive?

My buddy took it a few days ago.. Failed the first time, said its an hour long test.

    $101 to take the test

Only other advantage I see it the demerits, since you only have 7 or 8 right now...

The test is the same as before, but alot longer.. mostly city driving...

i took it a couple weeks ago,
the only difference in the advanced road test and the GDL test is that you do not have to do parking (including angle and parrallel), also you have to do a visual verbal test, say for instance that your driving and you see a child playing with a ball in their front yard, you have to state this to the tester. Having the full license isnt very much different from a GDL, but its just better to have i guess. good luck on the test if ya take it

Does anyone know where to take this? Can you go to any registry? Was the $101 using your car or theirs?

Does anyone know the failure rate for the first time someone takes the learner's exam? I hear it is quite high, like 80% or something like that.

yeah, heh i barely past, the maximum allowed points you can get is 75, and i got just that, 75. I was amazed, the first time i took the driving test (to get a GDL) i only got 10, things change over 2 years of driving i guess. I paid something like $84, and yes you have to have a car, or your parents car, you cannot go rent one, due to insurance problems.

hey guys... I have a question:
I passed my Drivers test First try, and I have a GDL

so, what is this second Advanced drivers test?
I hear, all it does is improve your demerits.

what happens if you fail the Advanced drivers test? Do you get your drivers taken away?

    thanks

my test was only 40 minutes -

    its not even hard.
if you can't pass it the first time i suggest you shouldn't be driving because we have enough bad drivers here

All you have to do is drive around and talk.

    It really isn't that difficult.

haha i've had my GDL since they first changed the law and still do.

    1. Learners Stage (Class 7 licence):
    * To get a Learners Permit you must:
o be at least 14 years old
    o pass a vision test
o pass a driving knowledge test
    * You must stay at this stage for at least 1 year and follow several driving restrictions.
    2. Probationary Stage (Class 5-GDL licence):
    * To qualify for this stage, you must
o have had a learners permit for at least 1 year
o be at least 16 years old
o pass a Standard (Basic) Road test
    * You must spend at least 2 years at this stage and follow several driving restrictions
    3. Non-Probationary Stage:
    * To qualify for a full Class 5 licence, after driving for at least 2 years as a Probationary driver, you must pass an Advanced Road test.

Note: It will take at least 3 years to go from a Learners permit to a full Class 5 licence.

It's really pointless and really does not affect anything other than the alcohol limit - which is good.

I took the test back in Feb/March, and I posted one of these threads as well.

It was ~$60 to take the test.
I had to use my own car (borrowed a friends)
They do a visual inspection of the car before the test. No windshield cracks, all lights working, car is in good mechanical order.
Radio must be off during test.
    No parking of any kind.
Took me about 20 minutes to complete the entire thing. Very easy.

    About a 60%-75% pass rate.

There is one point you need to point out dangers "ice on road, gravel, children, parked cars, etc) but it's not throughout the entire test, only for a 5 minutes span.

Be VERY careful about uncontrolled intersections.

I took mine at the registry on centre street. Great tester there, very understanding guy.

I believe after you pass your advanced and receive your full license, you can have more passengers in the car than there are seatbelts, alcohol blood level of 0.08% or lower and 7 or 8 extra demerits.

Depending on which driving school you go to you may have to pay extra to borrow the school's car. They'll make you drive on a highway and downtown usually. Test itself is usually about 40-60 minutes long.

That's what i thought..but in the driver's handbook it mentions the differences between having your class 5 GDL versus your full class 5 license and one of them said "having more passengers than seatbelts"
