I dunno about Calgary, but all the Staples up here in Edmonton run unsecured wireless that can be had from quite a distance. In fact, there is a strip mall on 170th, where the stores go: Future Shop---Linens N Things---Staples. I was able to access the Staples network from within the Futureshop, using one of the demo laptops.
As well, some guy in my apartment has an Airport that I get ~80/100 connectivity to, I havn't paid for internet since I moved in
If your laptop/PDA has a wireless connection, you just have to be near the hotspot, check your wireless configuration program (XP Default, D-Link, Linksys, etc), look for the unsecured network, and connect to it. Voila, free web surfing.Originally posted by GucciBoy

As well, there are programs that can break the encryption on a WEP-secured network, with maybe 1-4 hours of packet gathering and a few hours of number-crunching.
Heh I don't bother with WEP securing my network anymore. I just turned off SSID broadcasting and made my SSID very obscure.

question here, how do u tell if someone is on ur wireless connection and how do u f*ck with them a little bit? lol
Usually most routers have a "Wireless Settings" page, where the MAC address and Computer Name of all the connected computers are listed. It will be in different locations depending on the brand and model of your wireless router.
Enabling the MAC Filtering to allow only your wireless NIC seems to help in security as well.

Slap on an external antenna... usually access points transmit at higher power, so your laptop sees the connection (sometimes even full strength) but can't connect because the access point can't see your low powered device. That's why when you get close enough and connect, the link quality drops really low, cuz your end ain't powerful enough.Originally posted by Si_FlyGuy

With the right gear, big antennas, hacked firmware, I was able to build a wireless bridge from SAIT to my office downtown 1.6km away.
