hey guys. I noticed a while ago that the front axle on my gmc jimmy is a little wider than the back. I measure it and its an inch and a half wider in total than the back axle. Is there a reason for this?

Is your jimmy AWD or FWD...Or what? I think it could maybe be something for like durability or holding your engines weight or something...How do you like that car I was looking at purchasing on?
Is it IFS or a solid front axle? These guys might have an answer for you...

its 4wd, with front independent suspension.

if it is IFS then there shouldn't be a solid axle. My guess is that it is bigger due to toe camber that IFS causes when off-roading. Helps the wheels tuck into the fender better. Just a guess though
