It's a very different skill set than anything else...train handling is a very complex thing with a lot of variables. A 10'000 ton train that's 7'000 ft long is going to handly completely differently than a train that is 4'000 tons and 7'000 ft long, or a train that's 10'000 tons and 4'000 ft long.
That is kind of what I was wondering about, do they actually calculate out stopping distances and speeds based on weight and available brake horsepower or do they feel the train out as they go?

Yes, they are also required to "pace" for fuel conservation. It costs a LOT of money every time you start and stop a train(depending on the train it can be over 1000 dollars), so you tell them when there meet wiil be at point x, and they slow down to arrive at the same time so they can meet without stopping.

24 came out of "retirement" still a student, opened a Fountain Tire with a couple cousins about 9 months ago and loving it.

Owning a business is a blast, love being around cars like this. Working on cars when I want to but not having to if I don't, lets me still enjoy it. I love looking at fitment threads etc. Now I can sit there for hours at work helping people find that perfect wheel and tire combo for their car and get paid to do it. Having a shop with decent tool and equipment also makes working on my own car much more enjoyable. All the guy in our shop are young and enthusiastic, the oldest person in the shop is my one cousin who is 30. We all love cars, our staff lot on the corner has a 997 C2S, 996 C4S, S2000, BMW X5 5.0, and Land Rover Discovery. Don't think I can have this much fun in any other "job"

Not sure if I will be going back to school full time next year, having way to much fun with this right now, and am thinking about trying to get my own shop in the next couple years.

That's awesome, I've worked for Fountain Tire for ten years now. Its a very good company to work for. They kinda have a way of sucking you in for life. I remember being 16 years old and starting in the RAP program. Now ten years later I'm shop foreman and part of the management team.

Ya I am loving it, can't really imagine doing anything else right now, our shop is awesome, have a great staff, some great accounts and even better customers. We had our first year anniversary 18 days ago and our our proud of what we have built in that time. We set a record for turning a profit for a brand new retail store and couldn't be happier. This is one of very few jobs I think I can actually get up for in the morning looking forward to going to work. Who else can say on their days off that they want to go into their work place just to hang out and shoot the shit with the boys. The fact I make money, the store is profitable, and puts a decent sized cheque in my pocket is just a bonus. If I wasnt working there I would probably still be there all the time any ways haha.

I'm no longer there - at Suncor now (actually ran into a beyond member in one of my training sessions).
