Seems like I never did update this thread, or if I did, it was so long ago that I have forgotten.

Anyway these days I'm running a small consulting company that specializes in training, mentoring and advisory services for petroleum producing and service companies. It's pretty rewarding to look at what it could be. I love working with anyone who wants to learn. 90% of my day is marketing right now, and honestly that's a grind. Still, I'm learning a lot, and that's invaluable.

Saw this updated and hell why not update it myself. Last time I was working for a major producer, contract didn't get renewed and secured a really good job in Yellow knife for a few months and decided the hell with it, money and being somewhere i absolutely hated (Yellow knife sucks) wasnt for me and dipped to Europe/USA/Mexico trip for summer/fall. Came back and now working on contract as a Strategic Sourcing Specialist for a manufacturing company in Calgary. Works slow currently and they told me I'm most likely getting laid off around my birthday in late February when I turn 26 (which was what they told me from the get go). Planning a trip around the world for one year come March.

The one thing in the article I just can't agree with is the comment regarding "a 40 year guy can't be replaced by 2 10 year guys". In my experience it's the 5-15 year guys who are working hard and adding the most value while the veterans sit around scratching their ass with a huge pay cheque. Technically a lot of the lazy ones have also fallen behind and are stuck in their old ways and not willing to learn new things. This isn't true for most senior managers as they are in there spot for a reason (albeit some lucked into it and are still useless) but for the team level 25+ year guys. They usually have a chip on their shoulder because they haven't progressed and resent the company or the industry or their peers for doing better then them.

^Reservoir is a pretty specialized subset here in Calgary ( different for international ) and for alot of smaller companies imo its really easy and in a lot of ways better to outsource most of the true reservoir engineering work.

We went from a group of 6 in 2013 including a couple consultants to just 2 now. It's tough to justify the staff when a lot of the work can just be slid onto the area exploit or production engineer's plate and send modelling off to third party as required.

I wouldn't personally try to hang your hat on it as a long term career though it is a valuable skillset.

I hear you. The quotes in that article are about two sentences from more than an hour-long discussion.

The point I was trying to make is that if you had a "40 year guy" and thought you were getting good value from them in both production and value to the rest of the team, you aren't going to be happy with replacing them with 2x 10 year guys.
If you aren't happy with the performance of the 40 year guy, you'd probably be happy replacing them with only 1x 10 year guy . . . But that's a different conversation.

    Updated for me:
28 - Senior Technical Specialist for a service company. Most of my work these days involves working on high profile north east BC projects (when they go), or extremely needy customers which usually comes in the form of alliance engineer positions (so in house engineer). I also do a lot of project management for internally built software in conjunction with our IT because I have the field and operations experience. There are few rumors floating around about what my next step is but I am hoping its away from the technical world and back into an operations support role because if there is one thing I hate its running computer models.

Starting a new career after 4 years in law enforcement, moving into a safety position (oh&s) in industry for the private sector.
Has anyone else made a significant shift in careers (public to private sector), or another alike shift?
Seemingly stressful, albeit excited for the new career!!

Decided to quit my automation job due to them constantly screwing with my pay 'by accident', hours randomly disappearing, deductions that couldn't be explained and being told theyre cutting pay for time worked months ago (which I'm pretty sure is illegal...).

Part of me wants to continue in industrial automation / networking as its a lot of fun but also wondering what other options there are given that Oil and gas might just never come back.
