So the rx7, 300zx and supra were all direct competitors of eachother in their time. What was the MR2's direct competitors? The gen 2 was sort of alone in the market place.

wouldnt crx/del sol be more against the mr2 then a civic?
The sr20det engine was never offered here. The Mr2 is a sports car the civic is not. Starting price for a second gen mr2 na was $24Kcnd and for the turbo starting price was around $32Kcnd

well, as far as power / stock 1/4 mile times went, turbo DSMs seem to be in the same arena? not sure the gradient for handling between the 2 tho...
both 2.0 L 4 cyl 16 v turbo etc, both close in hp/trq figures?
doesn't the mr2 turbo beat the porsh boxter s and the mr2 g limited was 1 sec slower??
I always wanted one of those... only if I had $32K back when I got my learners... now it is too late.Originally posted by Redlyne_mr2

I don't think the 2nd gen MR2 had any direct competitors... it was unique in the way that it was mid-engine. As I recalled the Supra Turbo back than was pretty close in straight line speed, but much larger (2+2), front engine, and more expensive. The 300ZX TT was was a lot more expensive and maybe a little quicker. The RX-7 Turbo back then really needed a re-design by the time the 2nd gen MR2 came around... and it was more expensive. I really can't think of any more cars that were direct competitors of the MR-2.
The Fiero was a competitor for the first gen.Originally posted by thinmyster

werrd...the Turbo DSM's...
in terms of acceleration numbers in the same ballpark...but around a roadcourse...the SW would spank the DSM...man that chassis could handle...too bad the 2G's came out after the SW's demise here in N/A...
...@therealarifjina...
Yeah Porsche Boxter S's aren't that quick... They can launch hard but I've raced one with a buddy in his DSM (exhaust/intake) and we stayed with him. So I think an mr2 would pull from it in 2-3rd.
HAHAH Fieros are good enough to surprise alot of MR-2's I absolutely embarrased a Super charged 1st gen with my fiero 4 cylinder and all , I'm dying for a shot at a 2nd Gen.Originally posted by FiveFreshFish

There is a dyno video on beyond somewhere, i got 153 WHP, that was running really rich for unknown factors. Currently im collecting parts for a rebuild so i can lower my compression and go forced induction. Hopefully before i even get the turbo on i can dyno 170-180 WHP with 8.5:1 compression.

turbo DSM's were competitive with the Celica Alltrac's (turbo 4WD) of the time in our market. Overseas the GT4 was competitive with the STi and Evo up to 1998 when toyota stopped producing them.
As for mk2 MR2's...I don't really know. Sort of in a league of their own...
1988 Toyota Celica GT-Four
1994 Toyota Celica GT-Four WRC
Del Sol I guess
