IMO, I'd be more worried about the transmissions than the tow ratings. The vast majority of 4.0s had the 42RE which I would never use to tow anything, ever. '96-'98 5.2s had a 44RE which is somewhat better but still a little iffy. '93-'95 5.2 and '98 5.9 had the strongest transmissions, 46RH and 46RE respectively, which are OK for towing provided they've been maintained well and installing a shift kit will improve their longevity considerably. plus you can tow up to 6500lbs with the 5.2 if it has the factory tow package (i would assume class IV vs class III hitch?)
im thinkin about one for this winter. then put it on boat duty next summer
