We actually ended up with an Autobiography RR for that and few other reasons for my father but if it were up to me entirely, I would have picked the G without any hesitation.

It's just so damn boss. But ya it would definitely be a second or third vehicle.

You guys running studded tires in Calgary are funny. Pretty happy with my Golf R rocking Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4's on 18" OZ Ultraleggeras.

Loving the RS for the winter with the factory PA4's on 18's.

Every time there is a fresh set of snow, I always leave it in drift mode, and it is just the most fun experience ever. So much control and confidence driving this in the snow and drifting around, it's ridiculous. I can't remember a time I didn't do donuts in the snow every time I took the car out.

IMO, performance winters like the PA4 are the best choice for Calgary's winter season. On average, it'll have more grip than studded or pure winter tires because our roads are mostly dry through the winter. Although the days where it's super icy, our car w/studded Hakkas is in a league of its own.

Just need Nokian to perfect their retractable stud technology, fit them to performance winters, and it's the ultimate winter tire for Calgary.

With the amount of snow we're getting, my Jeep is definitely epic in this. 4x4 with the good tires I got on there make it indestructible in this weather.

Short wheel base Jeeps are crap on ice.

If you respond "you just need to know how to drive a jeep on ice" then it makes it anything but an "ultimate winter car"

Most of the AWD cars with winters here require lots of skinny pedal, not cautious feathering.

Unless it's deep snow, my STi is way better in the snow than my 4Runner, and the STi has cheap Nitto SN2/Champiro Ice Pro Studded and the 4Runner has studded Hakka 8s.

I hate my performance winters, never again. My car doesn't even have THAT much torque and they are near completely useless. Winter is just traction control city for me, even when it's dry and warm. Most days I honestly feel like they are equivalent to all seasons.

Next time around it is going to be dedicated snow/ice winters, maybe even studs.

If my tires are going to be entirely useless when it's dry I would at least like them to be half decent on ice and snow when we get it.

I have those champiros on my 98' impreza (except I didn't stud mine). Was passing people all day. Our much newer Impreza on Michelin X-ices is even better. I am thinking about selling my Jetta for another Subaru to be honest. They are such good winter cars

Yup. Very, very easy to spin out on a Jeep if you're not careful and don't have enough weight on the back. I've done 720-1080 spins in my TJ before, haha. But the good thing is even if I fall into a snow ditch, it's relatively easy to get out.

Shlade has a newer gen 4 door so it's a bit better than a 2!

My 2-door jk rubicon was great, sure the mudders where hockey pucks on the ice, but that's expected

The traction/stability (that you can't turn off fully except in 4-low) was HARD to push through to have any sort of traction-less fun

The sability control is super annoying. And only way to disable it fully is pull a fuse or do some wire splicing which I'm never going to do.

Finally drove the 330xi with blizzak LM-60s (wife's daily) and it's fantastic in the traditional sense of a winter car... really makes me want anything but these damn alpins that the M has on it

Agreed! I had the PA3's and thought they were awful in any sort of snow. Fun to let the back end loose once in a while but launching a car at an icy intersections took a gentle foot. Wheel spin isn't a desirable trait when you just want to get home from work in traffic.

In before some bro says "you just gotta know how to drive".

I'm not exactly sure of the point of performance winters? They all seem to get blown away by regular winters in terms of snow traction. I get that they provide better dry road handling but who cares. Who wants to spend more money just to end up not being able to carry speed through a winter drift, not me!!!!

On certain cars that require 19" wheels then you really don't have a lot of options for a low profile winter tire. I've used performance winter tires almost exclusively for years now and have never had a single issue. I feel if you are an above average driver that's all you need and maybe the exceptions are high HP RWD cars that require more traction at two wheels (I managed fine with a 400+ HP Mustang GT on performance winters). However there are few above average drivers in this city so you people that can only driver on studded or pure winter tires in Calgary need not be offended because you are the majority.
