Interesting discussion here. My understanding of this whole issue is limited, but from what I do know, and correct me if I am wrong, is that Jews settled there a long long time ago, then the Ottoman empire stuff happened and Muslims came, and settled there for a very long time, and then Jews came back and basically took over the entire thing, and called it Israel. Some wars happened and end result was some partitions, where parts were Israeli, and other parts were Palestinians. Israel got the bigger portion, but that wasn't enough and they started building settlements in Palestinian lands as well. I can see why both sides would be pissed overall at each other. One has historical claims to the land, going back hundreds of years, and the other had it under they control more recently, and then it all gets fucked when the Jews come back and want to settle on their old land again. That's the summary version as I understand it.

I personally think both of them are wrong. It wasn't fair for Jews to loose their homeland back in the ottoman times, but its also not fair for Palestinians to lose their homeland once the Jews came back. I don't support the violence on either side, but at the same time I understand both sides. They both would feel wronged over time. I do agree that Israel has right to defend themselves, but don't think bombing the fuck out of residential buildings and killing a bunch of innocent people in the process of trying to eliminate some terrorists is the right approach. Entire buildings being blown to pieces, and everyone in the world is cheering them on....turning a blind eye to anything they do.

I don't know anything more than what's on Wikipedia, but seems that the area was "jewish-controlled" for a kind of brief period, a couple of thousand years ago (before Jesus). 1880 to the first world war, lots of eupropean jews moved to the region to escape anti-semitism in europe. Then WWI and WWII, the various countries and bureaucracies in Europe spent a lot of time and ammunition killing all the types of folks who lived in the area, and then even more time and bureaucratic effort to partition the groups up. There's always been a shitload of muslims in all parts of that region.

Basically, The League of Nations, the Axis Powers, the Allies, and the UN have had their fingers in that region so long and so deeply, it's hard to untangle the current situation from the history.

That also being said, it's not high on my list of priorities to enforce or defend any parts of that area or it's residents. The behaviour may have roots in historical grievances, but everyone looks like assholes now.

These are very key points. The post-Ottoman planning and partition of the area was envisioned in racist and colonial 19th-century Europe and we get what we have today.

What would you think is the better approach, go building to building searching individual rooms? Hamas terrorists live among the population, use ambulances to transport weapons and store them under schools, hospitals and churches. They don't care about the Palestinians. Israel is taking the only and right approach, bomb the fuck out of gazas known Hamas strong holds, bomb them some more, then move in with ground forces. Innocent people will die, innocent people always die. If Hamas had attacked Israeli military installations then this response would be questioned, but they went in and specifically targeted civilians. They are a cancer and need to be sent to their 72 virgins. Hezbollah and Iranian leadership are next on the list.
