He seemed to be in line with every other reasonable quote I got
There were a couple of google companies that were out of this world.... like $500 for a straight fix

If you ever decide to get back in the garage door business Andy, you let me know
I had Tony @ Best Doors come fix my door last week, paid $350 for what sounds to be something similar to you.... convert a Wayne Dalton Torquemaster setup to a traditional torsion spring setup. I called Friday and he was able to come on Monday. He arrived on time and the work seems to be well done from what I can see. I didn't know it before hand but it seems that the Wayne Dalton system is somewhat proprietary. In hindsight I think I probably would have saved a few bucks by having a company that specifically sells Dalton doors come and just fix the existing setup vs convert it but I didn't really know what was what until after it was done. Was there any specific reason you converted vs repair?

Steel drums on the edges vs the plastic drums that were on my existing setup. The metal cables were a little bit rusted and with the conversion I got new cables
Springs are rated for like 5000 cycles or something like that so the next time the springs go its only $175 to fix, next time when you spring goes you'll be able to see it so its a quicker diagnosis

Good to know, I'll send him an email. I need some door work done, and most places require me to rent and pick up a scissor lift, which takes up my time and is around 400 every time. It'll be a lot easier if they can come out fully equipped to do the work. I am surprised how few door guys have their own lifts they could be billing to the job themselves.

Just busted a spring. Looking at my files, had both replaced in March 2012. Cost then was $600 with GST $50 of that was "travel time"
Is that a bit high compared to what you all have experienced?

Had "The Garage Door Depot" replace my springs today. $331.00 with GST.
Much better than the last guy "The Garage Door Company"
They were $211/spring, today's were $65 /spring. Pretty much the same labour and misc charges.

Interesting, I'll keep them in mind when I finally pull the trigger on a direct drive opener.

Had my opener break recently. Will be contacting some of these companies for quotes.

I used the garage door depot when my old opener quit few months ago. They came the next day to replace it with a new belt drive unit. No complaint here.

If you have the time it might not be a bad idea to do it yourself.
Replaced my opener by myself with me taking my sweet time it too about half a day.
Would be a lot faster if you have another person to help mounting the opener on the ceiling brackets.
Cost me $250 for the opener.

I'd love to move to a side mount, but I'm unsure of the costs of that.

I had Tony Degiusti come by a couple of weeks ago for a repair. He was professional and did a great job. I will have him back to swap out our garage door opener to a wifi model if anyone needs a 1.5 yr old Liftmaster for cheap.

Quote for the side mount was about $800. Too rich for me.

    Considering a Liftmaster 8500 is $ 650, I think $ 800 installed is actually pretty good.

Liftmaster 8500 (without battery backup) is under $500.

Our Liftmaster was acting up so we had Action Doors come and take a look (for free through the builder) and he mentioned that the 8500's suck. The old model (3800 or something) was awesome but these new ones break all the time. And that the new 8500C's are too new to know if they're any better.

I've heard similar things about the 8500 reliability issues, although just anecdotally. I'd stay away unless I absolutely needed the extra clearance.

I used Marriot Garage Doors on a recommendation from a friend and Tyler was great. he did mention the 8500 series being finicky though, but it came with my garage package at my request so we'll see haha..

Action Doors said the control panels seem to constantly forget the up/down limits and force requirements and then fry themselves.

Our track was binding and the down limit got buggered up but all fixed up now. They re-lubed everything up and its super quiet again, can barely even hear anything. He did mention to grease it up every 6 months or else your opener ends up working too hard to move the door up/down.

That's what i was told too, keep it lubed up and it will be happier for sure. My door is REALLY quiet, but it was only installed a couple weeks ago.
