Apparently it’s overkill. It’s a box that can stream movies and tv from various sources on the internet with a good interface that even kids can handle haha.

I found it a ton snappier. The remote feels nicer, I personally dont use the voice control but its got voice control built in if that's your thing. Built in volume control in the remote and support for atmosThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
If you're in the market for a new one, definitely spend the extra $15
4K has 3gb RAM vs 2gb on the 4, plus the bigger processor hence it does perform quite a bit better. I see it regularly, as I still have a 4 at home in one of the rooms and it feels slow as shit. The 4K also comes with gigabit ethernet vs 100mbps on the 4, but even 4K stream doesn't hit 100mbps so nobody really cares. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
But yea, at the negligible price difference, it's not worth going with a 4.

I am sorry if my overkill comment hit a nerve that wasn’t it’s intention. I obviously misunderstood what the op was looking for as I originally suggested the APTV4 and the shield but gave another option in the cheaper fire stick as the conversation started moving that way. Just to be clear I own several APTV’s and it’s my device of choice which I stated in the second post of this thread. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

To be fair, OP didn't even say what he was really using it for until well into the thread haha. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Basically, when anybody is asking for a streaming device for wife or kids, I'll always suggest an Apple TV. Ease of use means less tech support to deal with.

Well originally its for my wife who is not tech savvy at all. So Netflix and Amazon prime would work...Click and forget...
As I got into it I though I might as well add a few features as available.
2011 Ram 1500 QC Sport
2017 Jeep Cherokee Limited
If they are already apple people, I totally agree. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

When I said it was overkill earlier in the thread I meant price-wise. Apple TV starts at $229 apparently (looked on Apple.ca, don't know if it goes on sale). At that price you can outfit 4 rooms in a house with a Roku or a Fire stick and have access to your media in every single room using exact same interface, that's why I have as I don't have Smart TVs (hate them actually) so they work well for me. My parents and sister in Vancouver watch my PLEX media from my server on Rokus. dead simple to use. If you add all of them to one account, you can control them all as one, add channel to one and it will show up on all. I like them, might revisit the Fire Stick or Roku 4K when I care about 4K stuff, until then will rock my Roku's until they die, had mine since Roku 3 first came out, have 7 in total.
FYI, If you want to watch Flames games, there's no Sportsnet app for the Roku. You'll have to get an Apple TV for that.
Question for the FireTV stick, I see that it can run a browser.. can you watch youtube or shaw freerange through it?
There is no app on the Shield either, but I can cast from my phone easy enough. Does the Roku support casting? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
The Sheild is a no-brainer with all the sales as of late.
Sports is pretty awesome on the Apple TV. NHL app is awesome for days like today with a billion games. 60fps, and the non full screen video is perfectly sharp on a 4K TV. Flames games work too if you’re on any DNS service. Kills sportsnet app quality. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
MLB app is even better with more highlights stats and content but I don’t watch baseball.

There is an NHL app, so I am guessing with DNS trickery like Rage mentioned for the Apple TV, you can do the same thing with a Roku. Never used it myself, just know that the app exists and looks very much like Rages screenshotsThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I have a Formular 7z+ for IPTV, it runs Android TV so you can install other apps from the play store plus it has a fully functional remote and an app if you want to control it from a tablet
Not sure i would call it the best, I haven't tried other devices but it works for what we use it for
edit. you can stream to it as well from the network or even project your laptop by connecting as a second screen (wireless)

If you really want overkill, my recommendation is Xbox one x.
I have never bothered with an Apple TV because the Xbox’s have always been great.

Wait what, I can set DNS to 8.8.8.8 for instance and I can watch Flames games if I subscribe to GC?This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Apple does have the cheapest 4k movies though for those buying digitally. It has me considering an apple tv to compliment my setup. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Probably, I exclusively buy 4K Blurays though. I would consider one for rentals tbh. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
