Default first motor vehicle fatality of the new year

    what a bad one...

At approximately 2:45 a.m., police officers responded to a
disturbance complaint in the 1100 block of Kensington Cres.
    NW.

Upon arrival, officers found several injured persons lying in
the street and a large number of people in the immediate
vicinity. One person, a female in her early 20's was found
to be deceased and several others seriously injured.

EMS was requested and attended the scene accompanied by the
Fire Dept. Four of the injured were transported to the
Foothills Hospital and several other people who had minor
injuries were treated at the scene.

Investigations to this point have revealed a male subject
drove a van the wrong way on Kensignton Cres through a crowd
of people who were standing in the street. He then fled the
    scene.

The suspect vehicle was located by police being driven on 16
Ave NW. The vehicle was stopped and the driver who was the
lone occupant was taken into custody.

At this point, the circumstances surrounding the incident are
unknown. The Traffic Section of the police service is
    investigating.

Kensington Rd between 14 St and 10 St. NW is presently closed
    to all vehicle traffic.

We will huck that under the "unbelievably stupid" category. Despite how much i love my alcohol, and loooovve my beer, i would give it all up for a prohibition, because apparently people cant understand four words. "Dont drink and drive". I would be willingl to support a prohibition if it helps ease my mind in regards to my family and my girl getting home safe.

well they haven't said the driver was drunk yet (probably was though) but my question is what's a large group of people doing in the middle of the road? can't they use sidewalks? stupidity kind of goes both ways in this...

I can barely believe he drove off after mowing down all those people. Maybe he was in shock...

you're driving on the wrong side of the road and suddenly mow down a large people in a group. there's a good possibility you're under the influence of drugs or alcohol...the first thing that would come to my mind is "oh shit, wtf did i just do?!" then followed by the fear of the slightly injured people ready to kill me, and then panic of the consequences. i think a lot of people would have fled.

Normally we do bench racing on Beyond, now we're bench crash-analyzing.

I just have to wonder about the alcohol thing. Citybeat reports usually mention whether it might be alcohol-related, but they didn't make a statement either way in this case. It certainly seems that alcohol was a factor, but they didn't release any details on the driver - we don't know if he was elderly, drunk, high, anything. We'll just have to wait for more info to be released.

As well, I just cannot even speculate on what goes through a person's head if they mow down a bunch of people, I just can't. I've never even been in a situation like that. I have to assume that different people would react differently, but it is true that people under the influence would probably be more likely to flee the scene than a sober person.

Wow, I was at Original Joes, we had a provate party there for Paramedics, and myself and a few others left 5 min before this happened. Walked down past this location...just as we walked down 10th, there were cop cars screaming past us, we didn't know what happened! All I can say is, we walked past a group of people on the street there, and unfortunately I feel it may have been them that were hit....I'm at this point more in shock because of the fact that we could have just as easily been victims......crazy crap anyhow

There was a big party at Sams bar and grill, and there was an altercation inside the pub and spilled out onto the street. I believe the hit was intentional and the kid thought he could get away with it. 19 year old kid kills an innocent girl because of not being able into a party, whats wrong with this city.
