It will upconvert regular dvd's and some HD DVD dics come with both HD and SD formats so that if you get a HD tv in the future u can then play the HD side!

I considered the Oppo 981 very strongly...Out ot Ontario shipping would bring that player to $300.
I have an HD tv so I think I will simply buy the Toshiba HD player. Worse comes to worse...I have a $450 up converter!
Not like I never wasted $150 before!

Picked up the Samsung DVD-HD960 at FS yesterday for 185.00 and it looks amazing! VERY near HD TV.

Now all my DVD's will look sweet! and in 1080p
