    Default damn you snow

so i am driving my mom's 2003 durango back from church, i left a bit earlier cuz i had to do something. I take a shortcut. I am going 40 down the road, in 4wd, and there is a left turn approaching. I brake and to my surprise i feel the car start to slide. I start tapping the brake and turning the wheel left, hoping to get some traction back, after about 3 seconds of that, i put the car into 2wd, and start tapping the gas, hoping to change the direction, and have the back bumper hit, not the front, with the headlights and foglights, it turns the car a little and i manage to hit the corner of the bumper on the cement barrier. I was happy the air bags didnt deploy. The passenger side of the front bumper is cracked and thats about the only damage i can see.

SO now, i gotta replace the front bumper for this car! damn, i am scared.. i dont know how i am gonna tell my parents

Anyone know the approximate price to replace it?

#1 thing. Just tell them, you will be more than glad you did.

Just say, the road was Icy, my mistake. I will fix it for you, just don't hide it.... Bad things will amount from doing that

lol, i dont know if this applies to the thread maker, but i hate how people always think with like a jeep for example, that if you put it into 4wd, it all of a sudden becomes some super-wicked-unstoppable snow mauler that can do anything.

But kudos to the thread maker for actually knowing to kick it into 2wd in that situation to help swing the back out.

Well its just because you said "to my surprise" you felt the car start to slide. Like what handsomebassman said.

But yeah only thing you can do is tell them. Their gonna find out sooner or later. Goodluck.

The 4wd would have help him lots drop the tranny down to the lowest gear and the transfercase would have caught up...slowing the front tires down alot...I 4x4 in waprious all the time and this is what you do if you get in trouble going down a hill with cliffs on both side.

Just tell them man, it wasn't your fault, this is canada and it is winter, shit like this happens, you can't avoid it sometimes, sounds like you did your best to fix the situation and thats all that can be expected, if anything your parents should just be happy your ok, car parts can be replaced, no biggie.

Can you not do this with a 2wd?

Not in wet slippery snow you won't have anywhere close to the amount to 4wd...the weight distribution to the front lsd would greatly slow you down...all the weight of the vehicle is pushing down on the front end.

Yeah in winter don't try to turn and brake at the same time... Theres only so much traction a tire can give you summer or winter and if you turnign and braking your doing two things instead of just one.

Maximize the traction for only one input braking or turning.

So brake way early and then turn.

It sounds funny, but you have to remember that your parents were your age once, and one or both of them probably banged up their parents' car at one point or another. So, they generally take that sort of thing better than you'd expect.
