    Default Tire Width

Wondering if someone can help me out.

I have a 2004 GTI with 225/45R17's on there (on stock GTI wheels) but I need some new summer tires. I'm just wondering what other tire sizes will fit? I'm looking to buy used so I'd like to know what other options I have.

I've seen an ad online for 225/50R17. Will these fit? And be safe to use?

Also, if anyone knows where I can get some decent summer tires, I'd love to hear it.

    Thanks

Can you change tire width without changing rim size?

if he is trying to go wider from a 225/45r17 the 225/50r17's are not what you should be lookin for because the width is the same the only difference between those is the sidewall height and it will probably increase the diameter enough to throw off the odometer and spedometer.

Wheel diamiter is 17", but, then you have to know your wheels width, and it's probably 7". So this means that you could run anything from a 205 (stretched) through 235 or so...but ideally 225 is proper.

profile wise, 45 is appropriate as well. 45% of the width. going to a 50 series tire (225/50/17) would give you a larger sidewall, and would throw your speedo off for sure. probably about 4km/h slower at 100km/h than it says you are going.

Lastly, spend the money on decent tires for your GTI.

Why get used shit w/o warranty if you can get new rubber for a great price at our sponsors.

This gives an approximate 0.9" increase in tire diameter, or +3.5%.

May I ask why would you want to go beyond 225/45R17 if you are staying with the 17 inch size? This size works extremely well on MKIV Dubs and gives you a TON of choices. Prices are pretty resonable on many of them as well... PM me if you want some options...
