Default Coolant catch can w/NHRA rules, install.

Since my swap I ran out of room for my coolant resivoir. So I purchaced this beautiful CSI coolant catch can to replace it. Now it's you regular 1'ish foot cylinder. It has an inlet in the top and one in the bottom and also a drain in the bottom.

So it's obvious that the top nipple gets the feed from my rad cap overflow.

It's also now becoming my coolant reservoir. I'm guessing I should plug the bottom nipple as it has no where to run to. The one problem I'm wondering since the catch can is totally sealed unit with the bottom plugged it wont have any vacuum and wont be able to pull coolant back in the rad, as stock units are not 100% sealed the cap is made to suck air so the you can have air to feed the vacuum in the system. Is there something I can do with the bottom line to create my air feed?

Also what are the NHRA rules regarding catch cans, has to be sealed or cant be sealed I can't remember?

Maybe a smart as reply, but Adrian why didn't you ask Bill or who ever you were dealing with at Mopac what to do when you bought it, maybe you should have gotten a different type of catch can? I know I'd said I'd ask them for you when I was there last, but of course I forgot(to much stuff on the brain). They'd be the ones to ask.

Not quite, half the size has an inlet on top, then outlet on the bottom with a drain valve.

You spend money you dont have to buy things you dont need to impress people you dont like

The only replacment for displacement is money.

Just drill a breather hole, install a fitting, and attach a hose to it and run it down the side to keep crap from getting in the top. Plug the bottom. Wonder why they put the inlet on the top and a fitting on the bottom ???
Shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes.
Some type of thing as the second tube on the top of the catch can pic i posted.

Ok, that's easy. What about the NHRA rules?

All cars in competition with any type of water overflow capable of spilling water must have a catch-can to accumulate the excess liquids and not leak onto the track. Minimum catch-can capacity: 1 pint (.47 l). Catch-can must be securely fastened; i.e. bolted, clamped. Overflow may be routed into headers on cars that are supercharged or burn nitromethane or methanol.

Actually, 347 I just though of something. I'm thinking with this catch can that you route the overflow to the bottom inlet then let the top inlet be the air source. What do you think?

Sure. That will work just fine... Actually, Thats probably how it was intended to be used.
The one in the pic i posted has a tube running from the inlet all the way to the bottom of the tank, so that coolant may enter and leave as the engine heats up and cools down.
For some reason, this is how i imagined your overflow tank being configured/designed....
