Default S Class Twin Turbo V12

Last week I got the chance to see the new 2004 S600 with the Bi-turbo V12...
The exterior looks identical to an S500 except for the Polished 18" wheels, but the real fun is under the hood:

A mammoth 6.0L V12 with twin intercooled turbo chargers!! You couldn't even slide a sheet of paper anywhere in that fucking engine bay!!!!

to quote Dr. Evil... It was quite breathtaking, actually....

480HP and 570 lb/ft of torque.... makes me sick thinking of it....

The downside (besides having to pony up $186,000):

The hourly rate to servce the bitch once out of warranty will be ridiculous...but hey who cares, I am not buying one yet

Haha, whenever I think about this car I laugh, I dunno why, just the thought of an S-class being a 12 second car.

I hope BMW comes out with that E60 M5 real soon. It will be ugly, but it will be fast. I'd love to see how it stacks up against the MB equivalents.

Is it just me or is 480 disapointing for a 6.0L V12 with twin turbos and intercoolers??? I mean seriously, the porsche turbo is 420 from a 3.6L flat 6 with twin turbos and 1 intercooler.

The motor is setup so that it has a consistent powerband from idle to redline, and not optimized for horsepower. A Porsche Turbo has a completely different mission. A more favorable comparison could be made between the motor in an SL55 and a Porsche Turbo. The V12 in the SL600 is not designed to win drag races, or any race for that matter. It is designed to provide effortless, never ending power in any imaginable situation. These cars are not for boy racers.

the porsche has a pretty even powerband too. Its not like the old 930 turbo's with huge lag. I understand that its ment to be torquey and haul around a big car, but still. Unless this car is a diesel, its disapointing.

Quick question, what is the ratio between NM and ft/lbs???

oh ya, the porsche isn't a "boy racer" car either.

I disagree.. having been in both a 996 TT and a S600, the motors are completely different. The Porsche is like a fighter jet and the S600 is like a lear jet. The silky smooth transmission in the S600 makes gear shifts almost seamless.. the 6 speed manual (I haven't been in an auto 996TT) is far from silky.

The Porsche is made to behave like a race car, and is raced in a very similiar form (without AWD and the luxury bits like seats, very much like the GT2). The Mercedes is designed for 60 year old CEOs to commute into Manhattan and San Francisco, while the 996TT is meant to be the car they use to drive to dinner on weekends.

one other thing.. with 590lb/ft of torque, it is hardly a disappointment. We had a measured time of 4.6 seconds from 0-60 (almost Porsche Turbo territory in this megacruiser). That is hard to beat.

true. Those are very good points. Its just my opinion. Its soooo easy to get HP from a motor like that, thats why im shocked, thats all. But they must know their market better than i do. (lets hope anyways)

Well IMHO why they didn't make it more powerful is a) I believe that a car with over 500 HP from the factory isn't street legal in NA....could be wrong...

    b) If you made the 911 TT's super wound-up and tweaked engine as easy going as the S600's engine, meaning for around town and all day normal driving, the Hp would probably be around 250 HP, now wind up the S600 like the porsche with stronger turbos, and a 6 speed manual and I think you would have a car that not many people could handle with around 750HP....

AFAIK there are no laws limiting horsepower. However, there are emissions laws. These cars need to be able to pass california emissions and when you start getting to these powerlevels, I think the ability to pass california emissions starts to definatly play a role in the development of these monsters.

MB has a history of not stressing their engines at all. Look at how much torque that thing makes. Disgusting. Beware of modded S600's, in the future.
