Default concerned about being ripped off

I hate taking my car to the mechanic. I always feel like i am being ripped off and today Im sure i actually was.

My tires had been making some very weird noises and yesterday it was getting very bad. I took teh car in this morning. I was told that the tire was literally about to fall off. It cost 80 for the bearing to be replaced and 80 for labor (36 for 30 minutes). I was told by 2 friends (not mechanics) that that is a very high price for a bearing.

Im actually afraid to ask... but how badly was i screwed??

PS i have a 2000 Ford focus and the mechanic said that my car is more difficult to fix because of how the wheels, bearings etc are set up. anyone know if thats true??

    thanks

I'd be more pissed off about buying a car with wheel bearings that fail after 6 years. That's the real rip off IMO.

But yeah, the price is a bit steep for just 1 side. I had mine done for $100 for both sides. Maybe it's time to find a new mechanic.

160 Complete for a wheel bearing is not horrible.

Figure an half hour labor and 80 for the part.

you are paying for a service and for the mechanic to turn a profit.

Next time you could do it yourself for about 30- 40 a side.

That is a very good deal you got, IMO. Honda bearings for example.. are $60-75 a piece. A dealership will charge 2.5+ hours labour to replace both bearings. Consider yoourself lucky he wasn't charging you $95/hour.

my bearings have always been 5-8 dollars, but that's just for the rear.

Was it a bearing or a hub assembly?

    Bearings alone can be inexpensive.

If it's a hub assembly it the bearing is serviced as a whole unit which may also include the hub, bearing, wheel studs, ABS sensor, etc..

If your so worried phone a parts store and get a price on the part.

Figure on 0.5-1.5 hours a side to R&R.

I'd say you didn't get off too badly... Probably could've found it cheaper but then you can always find someone to do it cheaper. Take it to someone you trust to do it right.

You're lucky your bearings come seperately. Mine came as the whole hub assembly. It cost almost $300 per side. I paid almost $900 including labour to change both rear ones out.

I dont feel so bad paying 600$ for mine including install of new rotors and pads (figured he might as well do them since hes taking it all off anyways).
