Default Tonga Prince and Princess killed by street racer in SoCal

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060707/...a_royal_deaths

Franklin said Edith Delgado was trying to pass the couple's SUV when her car slammed into it, causing it to swerve across several lanes before tumbling to a stop on its roof.

Delgado, of Redwood City, was to be arraigned in San Mateo County Superior Court on charges of vehicular manslaughter and engaging in a speed contest, authorities said. She was being held in lieu of $300,000 bail.

what it a street racer or just a speeder? the news article said the 18-year old woman was trying to pass the SUV but didn't say if she was racing anyone.

PS: another proof that SUVs are not as safe as some people believe.

The 18-year-old driver who hit their sport utility vehicle was traveling as fast as 100 mph in Menlo Park, about 30 miles south of San Francisco, highway patrol Officer Ricky Franklin said. The woman survived the crash and faced arraignment Friday.
Just because they were speeding and 18 we assume they're a street racer? Maybe it's just some dumb brod in daddy's car?

    EDIT:

Mental note, read all posts before posting.

Engaging in a "speed contest"? WTF? That's a bullshit charge if I ever heard one.

    Maybe:
    - driving too fast for conditions?
    - unsafe lane change?
    - driving with undue care and attention?
    - speeding?
    - dangerous driving (causing death)?

But how the hell do they figure "speed contest" (ie. racing)?

Who's worse.. the California government, or Ontario? Probably Cali but Ontario's not far behind.

"Speed Contest" is the equivilent of our racing charge. And yes she was street racing in her 98 Mustang against her friend's Escalade. She tried to squeeze between the victim's SUV on the right and another car in front of her, sideswiped the SUV and caused it to roll. There's another later article explained it in more detail, google news search will pick it up.

She was booked on racing and vehicular manslaughter. They haven't charged her with the racing charge yet as they haven't found the Escalade which is what witnesses reported.

Ah.. ok, I must've missed that. Didn't notice that part in the first news article (which is all I had looked at).
