    Default B18a vs. b20

    Hey,

I currently have a b18a swapped into my 92 civic hatch, I got a sweet deal on a b20, What would be the diffrences, the b18a has lots of torque but i heard that the b20 has more, can someone clarify with me if i should rip the b18a out and put the b20 in if it would help with my 1/4 mile times at all...

    thanks alot

won't help (or hurt) 1/4 mile times. will help daily driving due to more torque. that's about it.

I estimate by the costs for the swap, wouldn't be worth it. Just add some more stickers/decals, same performance gains, but cheaper.

there pretty much the same engine, cept the b20 is 2.0l well the b18 is 1.8. they b20 has about 5lbs more torque, well the B18 has more hp. also if you plan on doing anything to the b20, the sleeves are alot weaker, and can crack.

if your looking for a good platform to build upon for power... go b18... daily driver (no top end) b20... but if you already have a b18, its not worth the swap

That's why I just say I have a 4" dick and lift weights to make up for it.

The b20 and the b18a/b have the same stroke. Their top end breathing is similar; not as good as gsr/b16. The b20 will of course have more displacement... If you are going NA, the b20 will be faster assuming the same setup (compression, cams, I/H/E, etc); no question.

A major thing to consider is if it is a b20b or b20z. If you aren't putting in aftermarket pistons you want the b20z. Its compression ratio is 9.6 vs 8.8 and worth 20hp... The b20b makes 126hp & the b20z makes 146. A b20b definately isn't worth it if you are using stock pistons.

The sleeve strength isn't an issue unless you are boosting. I ran a stock sleeved 85mm bore crv block, 1mm/40thousands over bore, with no problems.

That all said you'd be better off getting a vtec head then just swapping the b20. 170whp on a non-vtec b20 is pretty much the affordable limit. A lsvtec will get you that right out of the box.

The B20 has more potential due to its displacement, but you already have a good base. Spend your money on it.

+1 to the above statment. Stock for stock, keep what you have. If you plan on building, then go B20.

If you're looking for a set of aftermarket B20 pistons, take a look in the garage sale link in my sig. I have a set as well as a good set of cams to compliment them. PM me if you're interested and we can talk pricing.
