Default wtf air fares! Price keeps changing big time

I am looking to book tickets home for my spring holidays.

Departing NEV on April 14th (15th if the price is cheaper).
    Return on May 6th.

I checked the prices 2 days ago....round trip was $1300. I had to confirm something with somebody so I didn't book it immediately. I came back on later to book that and the price was $1500. Ok so I'm like wtf....I think to myself that I'll just wait and see what happens. I've had this happen before and the price falls back down later.

I logon today and the price is $1500 all day.

    Until just now.....
6:25pm here and I check the price: It's at $3800.

Can someone explain to me wtf is happening here????

    This shit is F'd up.

The prices for all the god damn tickets went up like $1g. Is there some reason for this??? wtf????

Freaking out and any info would be appreciated because I need to book these tickets ASAP. $1300 was reasonable...$1500 reasonable...$3800...hell no. Cheapest I can find on Travelocity is now like $2400 which is just insane. WTF happened to cause this shit? am I screwed or should I just wait.

The prices are based on how many tickets the airline has for each specific day. They predetermine how many tickets they will be selling at each price. Once the tickets at one price sel out, they go to the next 'tier'.

    Where are you traveling to/from?

    NEV (Nevis) --> YYC

So the tickets for the "day" are gone. Check back tomorrow and they will open up more tickets in my "tier"?

I've got the most expensive fare as is in the whole school...I've never had to pay more than $1400, I can't see why the price would nearly double when there are still like 10 seats available on the smallest plane leaving the island on the 14th. I booked my tickets during high season just like 30days in advance for $1200'ish round trip.

    Goin crazyyyyy

Usually not, except in the case of extenuating circumstances (such as a cancellation).

Let's say that they have 100 seats, they need to to sell at least 30 @ $XXXX.XX in order to cover operating costs; 30 @ $YYYY.YY which is where they make their profit; and 40 @ $ZZZZ.ZZ which they usually sell at a discounted rate.

    $1300 = Z
    $1500 = Y
    $3200 = X

Ah yeah sorry I understand now. Brain fried this week from studying, not thinking straight.

Worst comes to worst I will chill a day or 2 here on the beach and then come home. I just want to come home ASAP though because I've got a shitload of stuff to do while in town.

Note to self: If I think a deal is good...book the damn thing on the spot.

Edit: Notice has been posted on AA website...YOU MAY EXPERIENCE PRICING ERRORS WHEN BOOKING A TICKET. Checked the pricing again....it's back down to 1450 bucks. That god damn pricing error just screwed with my mind for the last hour or so haha. Thank god. Ticket = BOOKED

My ticket prices keep changing too, $908 to $983 to $1038 depending on how many passengers I choose and/or the day.

Do tickets usually get cheaper or more expensive closer to the date you need them for? I keep procrastinating...

Usually the earlier you book the better off you are, but less popular non-peak flights can have discounts direct from the airlines because they're trying to unload them. So if you can have flexible travel dates you can still find some good rates closer to the dates - but you have to be very vigilant about rechecking the fairs - lufthansa does this and you can get some really good deals that way.
