Default Rant: Lines on the road

Does anyone else find it very annoying that in this city a fair majority of the roads don't have proper lines painted? I don't know why Calgary doesn't have the permanent lane markers that you see in most major US cities.

In Vegas they have the reflector type permanent lane markers so you never have to repaint lines on the road. You think a winter city like Calgary would adopt these so they wouldn't have to re-paint lines all the time. Maybe it's just me that goes on roads that don't have adequate lines but thought I would throw it out there.

    lol,

True, but the lines are pretty brutal, especially deerfoot southbound over the bridge past Anderson.

If that road is wet the lines are impossible to navigate.

Most people are smart enough to follow the movement of traffic, but I have seen some close calls there.

Add Glenmore to that list, where the construction is and the lanes jog.

They were pretty bad, but it looks like they repainted them recently when I drove through there today .

They must have heard your complaint about Anderson/deerfoot.. there are lines there now.

I can navigate it without lines, it's the other morons who don't.

It's pretty awful at Glenmore though.. damn.

they have those reflectors in vancouver too. i always wonder how good it is for your tires to go back and forth over them all the time at highway speeds, they look kinda big. haha, i always try to dodge them when i change lanes

All lines are repainted every year. The only way it's going to be improved is if they use permanent epoxy traffic lines. This involves grinding out each line in the pavement, then pouring the mixture into the cut out area to form a line that will wear with the road. Right now these are used in high traffic areas like turn lanes in an intersection.

It's just not feasible to do anything about the current lines.

Comparing them to other areas isn't fair. We have a different climate, harder compound tires, and abrasive elements on the road to name a few. Not to mention painting is done after the streets are cleaned and weather warms up.

i wondered that too. but it seems we repair roads so many times in this city that it just doesnt seem worth doing. really i think the lines are fine. it just pisses me off when they widen an existing road and take forever to take out/put in the new lines, like on crowchild during those overpass projects. it felt like you were driving between lanes.

I'd love to see what would happen when a snowplow rolls over one of those.

I'm also guessing they don't hold up very well when it's -40 outside.

grew up on the coast and often wondered why they don't have the reflectors here, then I wondered if it would make plowing impossible since they stick out?

haha have you never seen the roads after it has snowed? all the lines are in the middle of where the tire tracks are.

I've seen places where they recess the reflectors in the road so snow plows can still go over top. Really cool, but I'm guessing super expensive.

Deerfoot Trail Northbound to Memorial Drive Westbound. At that set of lights, people are confused and don't know WTF they are doing. I just stick to the far left side and pass everyone.
