Default The Bow and 6th ave closure = Total Disaster??

    http://calgary.ctv.ca/servlet/RTGAMA...calgary.ctv.ca

can anyone confirm what parts of 6th ave will be closed? i can't believe the city would allow all of 6th ave to be closed. That would cause gridlock in downtown during rush hour on a Tokyo scale. That is the major artery through downtown and feeds 3 lanes into Bow Trail. Are they planning on the one lane on 4th ave to feed the whole of downtown onto Bow Trail? that's lunacy. So far i can't find details. Maybe only a couple of blocks will be shut off?

I also just read that they are thinking of closing parts of center and 5th ave as well. This must be a bad April Fools joke.

The city needs to think. FIRST you build infrastructure THEN you build more buildings and capacity. If you do things in reverse you’re creating a nightmare. Put the C-Train underground, free up 7th ave, build some flyovers through downtown onto Crowchild and Memorial with no stop lights, THEN think about building more office towers to accommodate more people.

I dread the though of having to go into work when this crap is in effect. Might have to take a 1 year vacation and just stay home lol

This city is never ahead of the curve when it comes to infrastructure....

If we waited for alternate routes to be constructed, the building wouldn't be built until the 2020's.

I think a little short term pain is a small price to pay to bring some life back to that side of the city, not to mention to construct a landmark building.

There was a story on CBC 1010 a few weeks ago where the owner of the Budget dealership on 6th was complaining about how much business he would lose and how difficult it would be to for the rigs to offload all the new cars that come in. Not sure how high that factors in on the relevance scale in terms of how the city is planning on executing the closure.

They also want to close lanes on 5th Avenue and Center Street now.

The Centre Street bridge was completely CLOSED for a while back in 2000 and people werent hurling themselves from tall buildings.

I think a one year closure of ONE BLOCK of 6th ave will be fine. Calgararians will adjust accordingly.

    ^^^

Yeah except now there's 100,000 more people. How many that work downtown, I don't know. It doesn't affect me anyway since I don't work in the core.

So just to clear things up, I work for the company developing the building. Between 1 St S.E. and Centre St will be closed for about 11 months. 9 months + 2 months if needed. Plans are trying to be put in place for 1 lane closest to the site to be closed for a period of time as well on Centre Street between 5th and 6th Avenue on both sides of the project. Also proposed is 2 lanes on 5th Ave. The closest to the project will be used for construction purposes and the second for transit to run the opposite way.

As much of an inconvience as it may be, we can all adjust.

It's only 1 block, it won't be that bad considering all the changes they're making to alleviate any problems.
