MahJong All Pong Hand

Hi all,

This is a question for all the MJ fanatics out there. I have a question regards to the MJ All Pong/Triplets hand. I know there are variations but I'm just curious what the consensus is out there as I can't really find a definitive answer on a google search. Anyways, my question is, in a the MJ All Pong hand (which is a mix and match of triplets), does the eye have to a special character? ie. dragons or winds? My understanding is that it has to be if you are doing a mix and match. Thanks.

but th eye can be, and has to be , a pair of anything. Doesnt have to be special characters, as long as it is the same. Unless you are doing the "same kind" and "pong" at the same time, then they must also be.. of the same kind, no special character

OK.... The "all pong" hand you're talking about is "dui dui wu" in Cantonese.

To win with ANY hand, you need "eyes" these "eyes" can be anything, but they will affect your final hand.

The basic hands are :

all "sheng" which is "ping wu"
all "pong" which is "dui dui wu"
combinations of "sheng" and pong" which is "chicken wu"

then there is all the same "suit" kinda like a flush in poker

There are also other special hands with the "winds" and "dragons" as you call them. But I will not get into those here cause they are more complicated.

You can have a combination of the "flush" with the "dui dui wu" or "ping wu" or "chicken wu" all of which will affect the "fan" of your hand.

Also, the "winds" and "dragons" do not really "count" as a suit as a mixture of the "winds" and "dragons" with another suit like the "sticks" counts more than if you mix "sticks" with "circles".

That's all I want to explain for now, hope it helps. If not, I'll try to explain more later.

Sorry, I should have clarified that in a 3-Fan minimum and you are going for a mixed "dui dui wu", can you use anything as your eye or does it need to be a special character? For example, are the following hands both valid as a 3-Fan win?

1 Flower (not your position)

1 Pong of 3 soc chi (bamboo)
1 Pong of 4 Manji
1 Pong of 9 tong chi (balls)
1 Pong of 7 Manji
Eye of Bac Ban (White Dragon)

Hand #2
1 Flower (not your position)

1 Pong of 3 soc chi (bamboo)
1 Pong of 4 Manji
1 Pong of 9 tong chi (balls)
1 Pong of 7 Manji
Eye of 5 tong chi (balls)

I'm asking because this debate always comes up and I haven't been able to find anything definitive so I am wondering what the "Norm" is. Thanks.

From the examples that I have seen on the internet, they seem to always use a special character as an eye for this winning hand but they do not express say it.

I've always played it this way. I don't think I've ever used a regular tile to use as my eyes.

Your eyes can be anything. They don't have to be a special character. You get no extra points for the eyes.

no the eye does not have to be a special character(dragons or wind). It can be bamboo's, ten thousands, or circles.

1. All triples (pongs) without being the same suit will be 3 points.
2. All triples (pongs) same suit BUT with dragons/winds will be 3 points. + points from dragons/winds
3. All triples (pongs) All same suit is 9 points. 6 Points for being suited and 3 points for all pong's

Yes, I read up on the wiki, but the example that they have shows the green dragon as the eyes and does not prove or disprove whether special characters need to be the eye.
