I was just here reading about Titan, the methane in the atmosphere, and the possible methane lakes.... and it hits me... if Methane is a fossil fuel... then Titan musta had a LOT of life at one time.
Yes? No? WTF

It can also be created by "mud volcanoes" I don't think life is necessary to create methane.
everything I have read says its a "fossil fuel" like oil and coal...Originally posted by Hakkola

Search for Abiogenic Hydrocarbons... heres a wiki link to get you started.

It is generally accepted that the major (if not complete) source of methane on earth is decompositon of organic matter. However, methane is fairly common throughout space (interstellar and gas giant planets for example) and the existance of non-biotoc pathways to create methane are known (ex. Fischer-Tropsch process and Sabatier reaction). Granted the two methods I have mentioned require metal based catalysts to make the reactions commerically viable.Originally posted by Toma

So, the non-biotic pathways and fairly common appearance of methane make me believe that methane can be created in/on a planet that never has had life. What these reactions or pathways are I have no idea. Though I would guess that it involves high energy particle strikes and/or free radicals and/or decompostion of more complex molecules.
By, the way this is off the top of my head, ie. complete conjecture on my part. Looks like the chem degree is good for something apparently.

This theory is generally not accepted by modern O&G. We actually bantered this theory around work a few weeks ago (I work in O&G). SOme of the guys think that it could have created a small amount of the hydrocarbons found, but not a significant amount.Originally posted by Ripper

As mentioned in my post above I think that abiotic processes produced the hydrocarbons found off the earth (not the processes in the abiogenic theory, but others) but biotic process were the feedstocks for the hydrocarbons found on earth.
If you're looking for life on a moon, read up on Europa. Underground liquid ocean y0.
LOL... now wouldn't that be something.... oil, gas, coal are natural products prduced within the earth... Interesting theory, and makes sense in light of extra terretrial sourced... I was readung that something on Titan must be renewing the methane, cause UV light apparantly destroys it continually...Originally posted by Ripper

Now THERE would seem to be one giant conspiracy theory if natural gas, and as they suggest...oil were not actually "fossil fuels"
After some googling.... I found that oil wells are now pushing depths of 10 km in some areas.... yet the deepest any fossil has been found is 2.5 km, and most of the worlds seas and oceans are no deeper then a 1 huundred meters to a few km, except some of the very deeped trenches in the pacific that maybe upto 11 km deep....
Any geologist in the house?? How did all this biological matter, no matter how prehistoric... get down to 10km below the earths surfce? Is this possible?
Its just a matter of erosion and sediment... For example most of what we're drilling for in fort mac right now, is only down about 2-300m.. And a lot even shallower, thats why they can mine it... I'm not up on any real deeep wells, although I know of some reading around.. For the most part not much is found down that deep...

Toma its called Tectonics. Plates move, fold, erode, recycle. I don't know of any Petroleum wells 10km deep, none.Originally posted by Toma

Have a look at this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...e_interactions
To understand tectonics.

China and Russia currently have 10km wells...
Is their measurment in TVD or MD? Big difference.

I just seen the deepest horizontal well is over 6km, tvd.. Only 184m layin flat though.. ha

When will Transcanada build a pipeline to Titan?
