    Default Car Washing

I am new in Calgary, Got some question regarding car washing

I lived in a house, not townhouse or condo

Am I allowed to wash my car outside my garage ? I was washing my car this afternoon and my neightbour came to me and said if he see me washing car outside again he will call the city calgary and give me a fine . . .

He stated that its illegal washing car outside your house , is he right ?

The City of Calgary has a by-law (37M2005), but basicly, it states:
It is an offence to allow any prohibited material into the Storm Drainage System. Examples of prohibited materials include: soil, waste, animal waste, cooking oils, greases, gasoline, motor oil, solvents, paint, cement, sawdust, yard waste, pesticides, biomedical waste, hazardous waste, soaps, detergents and water from hot tubs. Direct Calgary by-law link here.

When you wash your car in your driveway, the water that you use to rinse your car ends up going into the gutter and into the storm drainage, which flow directly into the Bow River, untreated. All your neighbours have to do is call you in. The fines are pretty severe. Also at the bottom of the document I linked.

If you wash your car, just don't use soap, and if you do use soap, make sure it doesn't reach the drain (IE: bucket wash) and they won't have anything to call you on.

At my house it'll probably dry up before it reaches the drain.
    Maybe he means that

Bucket washing don't prevent shit. If the soapy water touches the ground, then it will eventually make its way to the drain. Think what happens when it rains. Water may dry up, but the residue is still there.

Well they do not really enforce the bylaw as you see construction sites everywhere tracking dirt all over the road. I just use water or do a handwash out front and only soap at the carwash as i dont know if my neighbours are snitches.

The neighbors would never think of that, and the bylaw officer probably wouldn't enforce it unless they were having a bad day. As long as it doesn't reach the drain with the soap in the water your fine. I realize that once it rains or such, the residue will reach the drain... but...

I was always unsure of this, are you allowed to wash your car if you use biodegradable soap?

None of my neighbors have never hassled me, but i have been using the biodegradable soap anyways...

What's your neighbours address? We'll all go over and take a piss on his lawn.

Calgary is so much like an iphone: iCalgary - There's a bylaw for that.
