Default Honda extends the warranty on 6-million cars. (US)

Honda has decided to settle a class-action lawsuit that alleges its odometers were racking up miles too fast. The automaker says odometers on some 6 million Hondas affected by the suit were accurate to within 3.75% on the high side. The NHTSA doesn't regulate odometer accuracy, and the only industry standard is a voluntary one set by the Society of Automotive Engineers that says odos should be within +/-4%. While the car's affected by the suit fall within that range, Honda recognized that its customers expected their odometers "would be based on zero," and they weren't.

The settlement will lengthen the warranty mileage of affected vehicles by 5% and Honda will pay lease-mileage penalties incurred by owners, which is expected to cost the automaker around $6 million. If you own a 2002 to 2006 Honda or Acura bought between April 12, 2002 and November 7, 2006, then you're eligible for the benefits of the settlement.

The lawsuit also prompted lawyers to test the odometer accuracy of other vehicles. It was found that on average domestic vehicles were nearly perfect in their odo accuracy, while Toyotas actually racked up fewer miles on the clock than they did in reality. Nissans, however, didn't fare as well, and a new class-action suit has been filed on behalf of Altima owners who say their odometers are counting the miles 2.5% to 3% faster than they should.
Honda fanboys, you are getting bent over.

Isn't this old news, or is it a new settlement?

BUMPING cuz this is the only related post I can find. If this is a repost, please feel free to close.

So I got 2 letters from Honda last night (cuz I bought 2 civics during the 01-06 timeframe). It was a pretty hefty lawsuit package, so I didn't get a chance to read every single page from it yet. But basically, it's about the class-action lawsuit mentioned above but for us Canadian owners.

Here's the weblink that was referred to from my letter.
    http://www.canada-odo-action.ca/

To the guys who also got this letter, what are we supposed to be doing here? I personally didn't get any warranty repair done during that time, so I can pretty much just ignore these letters right?

What have we learned? The higher the fanboy base, the larger the cock filling their behind as they get screwed.

Exaggerated hp #'s, odometers conviently racking up miles too fast. lol WHAT A GREAT COMPANY!!!

The worst part is that the outcry will be pretty minor compared to if a domestic car company did the same thing.

This problem will not cause you harm or damage your vehicle.

BUT it's worth double checking. In case you paid for servicing that could have been covered under the warranty mileage limit that is within the 5% range, and if you were leasing and paid for extra mileage. Refer to your letter when you get it.

Incorrect assumption. Canadian owners are covered.

The details, your eligibility, and what you are eligible for are outlined in the letter.

Got my letter last night too. It's basically an extension of 5% on warranties because the odo's were running up too fast

Looks like if you had repairs done and your car was just above the number of kms allowed under warranty (60 000kms or 100 000kms depending on repair) AND your car's odometer was still reading less than the extra 5% given in this settlement, Honda will let you make a claim to get the repair reimbursed under warranty.

    Hope that made sense

Why are you quoting outdated opinion from 2 years ago?

These cars will depreciate faster due to the exaggerated mileage. Honda should have to do more than the bare minimum 5% warranty extension.

haha oops, sorry. It's approx. 1 year, 8 months, and 12 days old.

So with that... good see that things are being done about this problem. Good thing it's just an odo problem. Actually, shiiiiit 5% for me is like 7000 kms. Someone better push for more reparations.

Anyone who has ever done any Navigational Ralleys has known this since the 70's. Most manufacturers used to do this by a margin of about 2% to 4% on thier speedos (and subsequently the odometers) to keep them from getting sued for speeding tickets. Subaru, Toyota, and Alfa Romeo are the only make of cars that I have ever owned that were not out by more than 1%.

The only reason this is suddenly a big deal is because of grandma driving around expecting the gps to match the odometer within 3 feet.
