^^ rule changed, you dont need a recall letter from BMW canada anymore, any simple letter from a us dealer will do and RIV will accept them.

I don't know why my previous messages got deleted, it's not like I'm trying to sell anything or make any money, I'm just trying to help out.
So I will try to rephrase my previous posts:
I know a person in BMW that can fax you guys a recall letter for cheap (She still has to charge but it's much less than BMW Canada charges and it's gonna be done the same day, she just prints it out and faxes it over), and they're acceptable by RIV because she did it for me and I got my inspection form the same day.
She can do it for any BMW.

You can get it for free from any US dealer. Why the hell would we pay the lady you know?

For real? The rules changed? Damn and I read all the pages to find out I learned nothing lol.
No - you can't get a recall from a US dealer. RIV won't accept it. Read the Transport Canada list of importable cars. The letter must be from a Canadian dealer who will then fax the letter to RIV on your behalf.
you're an idiot, did you even read the threadOriginally posted by grandmasterYYC

you still need the cluster change on newer bmw's though...
Good to hear that BMW has finally pulled its head of of its ass.
I just brought up a 2006 Jeep. The recall letter I simply went to chrysler.ca and entered my VIN and hit print.
Seems silly that any other manufacturer can't do the same.
Just FYI.. I crossed the border last Sunday at 3:00pm, and as of yesterday (Friday) at 5:00pm the vehicle is now reg'd in AB after doing the Federal, and OOP.
Hmmmm...Ok I'm not too smart but could you give me a run down of what's required when importing a bmw from the states? Or maybe sticky a thread with updated detailed instructions. In my mind, I buy it, show border bill of sale, pay taxes, show carfax, they give me thumbs up and I go home. But I know it's not that simple.
DO you still?Originally posted by mekeni

but if you get the recall letter from a US dealership, who's going to make you change the cluster?Originally posted by benyl

Cdn tire?
They will make you change the cluster if you do not have KM/H indicated anywhere. same difference. I suspect TC would have to inform Cdn Tire and they would have enforce it.

The only BMW's required to have a cluster change are ones with i-drive.
I just imported an 01 M5 (no i-drive) and a new cluster was not on my list of requirements to get my recall letter (which i now have)
BMW Canada is the ones making you get the cluster change, not Canadian tire.
Canadian tire will only make you get a cluster change to pass the OOC inspection if your car has no km/h readings (which all BMW's have, even US models)

So do the e90/e92 have i-drive and need the cluster change?Originally posted by nbaker00

So now we don't have to pay for recall letters, but still need a letter of admissibility? am i missing anything else?
Its been a while since i imported a BMW, possibly looking into bringing in a 335i or another M3.
