    Default Catalytic Converter

I think my cat is plugged up pretty bad - I tried to look through it, and you can barely see an opening. I've also noticed my car strain a lot more than before.

I am considering one of two things:

    1) Replacing the cat with a high flow cat or test pipe

    2) Opening mine and gutting it

Has anyone cleaned their cat before, or gutted the insides?

Does anyone in Calgary do this? I've even read that it could reduce performance, something I definately don't want.

i got my cat hacked out and replaced with a test pipe a month or so ago.... $65 at carline

cut 0.4 seconds of my time at race-city so yes it helped.

now be warned..... it sounds like ass and kinda sticks

See i'm not really into the loud exhaust thing...never was. I bought my catback specifically because it had a resonator, so the sound is not much louder than stock.

I guess the best solution would be to buy another OEM cat...

Where can I pick one up from? Is the rotten egg smell associated with a high flow cat?

what year is your car dude
The way to remove a cat is to replace it with a resonator.
That way the sound stays very close to the same. Plus gain the extra power. Rotten egg smell is associted with a plugged cat.

My car is a 1994. Again, i'm not really worrying about performance increases, I hardly think replacing a cat will do anything anyways. I'm looking for the best at the cheapest price.

Wouldn't adding a resonator gives it a crappy sound? Or is that just with a test pipe?

It is the test pipe that gives crappy sound. A good resonator will break up the sound. That is the cheapest. If you pm me with the dimensions of your cat I can find a cat for you for a good price if you want.

mopac will most likely give you one of the best prices...but IMHO i would cut it off and if you really want you can get a rezonator...the smell isn't of rotten eggs...more like something burning and it really isnt noticeable except maybe when you stop and get out of the car and the wind blows it your way...

My GTI is quiet without a cat, some cars are worse than others, but at a stop light you cant even tell its on and all I have is 2.25 supersprint pipe to a supersprint muffler. No mid muffler or resonators or anything.

Only time its lout is under WOT, but it sounds awesome anyways.

well yeah of course it's not as loud...turbos run a lot quieter than N/A cars...a lot of turbo cars don't even use mufflers and still keep the noise levels acceptable...i can even think of the SRT-4 that does that straight from the factory

His car has the N/A motor out of a newer passat in it, but its not a turbo, unless he's done a 20V swap or a turbo upgrade since the last time I talked to him.
