New Paintjob Tips?

Hello!

I recently got a new paintjob done and it seems that the new paintjob, while done quite well, seems to be missing a few things.

It's not shiny as the original factory paint and it feels rough to the touch. It's not smooth and glossy-looking.

I'm not sure if the new paintjob just need some waxing or if they forgot to apply a clearcoat or something.

Anywhos, what are some tips for a car that just had a new paintjob? Wax it or what methods are there to make it shine?

My dad said something about a rubbing compound but he's not entirely sure.

your dad maybe right.. maybe its some overspray on your clear that makes it rough. I'd say give your car a few days for the paint to cure up on your car and then wash it and claybar it and see if the roughness is gone. The reason I say wait a few days is because your paint is still soft to the touch and you may not want to mar it.

Well before I drove off, I repeatedly asked the autobody people and he said it was fine to get it car washed. It was done during the weekend but I was only able to pick it up today.

And I had it washed.

Should I invest in a buffer/rubbing compound combo or just let it sit out and see what happens?

I'd be a bit weary about doing something harsh to your paint such as a polish or a clay if it wasn't baked after being painted. Typically you should wait 30-90 days depending on the type of paint they used before it fully cures.
If water gets on the paint and you leave it to dry, it'll etch your paint and it'll be a bitch to take out. I know first hand and my car is black.

Did you try gently hand washing it? It could just be some residue from the polish they use to wipe it down after they paint. Overspray is another possibility, in which you should bring it back and ask them to fix it.

Aiya... I had it automated car-washed. I asked him multiple times if it was okay to get it washed and he gave me the thumbs up and now, I'm quite worried that I ruined it.

Ask and you shall receive. So basically, the front fenders, bumper and hood are the newly painted ones. Everything else is factory.

Out of the last three, the middle was taken from the front door. As you can see, it has the mirror-like finish, whileas the fenders have this wavy, bumpy texture going on.

I wouldnt invest in a machine buffer. You should stay away from the wash and wipe(and wax) for a few weeks. Let the paint harden before you put pressure on it.

To clear all that mess up: the orange peel, fisheyes, overspray, the long distance spray that makes it rough. You should consider going back to the body shop to wetsand and power polish, this should leave the car looking glossy and factory looking. Or use a Heavy cut polish to clean it up.

dont attempt to power polish your own paint as it takes skill not to burn and swirl the paint.

HEY.......i paint from my garage......lol.....however the only defects i have are the odd run or dust in the clear coat

I wonder how many coats they had to do to cover the original color (the parts used to be factory red so for a while, I had a christmas-themed Integra )

Basically, will a wetsand and waxing get rid of the imperfections? My dad knows how to do the wetsanding and the waxing but I'll ask him if he's up to the task.

Okay. I just got off the phone with AAA Auto Repair (Terry, nice fellow ) and he said that all I have to do is to continue carwashing it and then wax right after. Something about the paint "settling."

His reason was since the original color was red and there was no color combination for green AND red, it came out thick and bumpy. He said the more washes I get for the car, the better it'll become.

Now I'm quite confused.

I don't even know where to start with what the bodyshop told you. To the best of my knowledge, you shouldn't be able to wash away any paint. Secondly, what your pictures show is orange peel, not some combination of red and green...I have never heard a shop use that one before. I personally think it was a poor paint job, with paint that didn't match. Tons of orange peel, and very little attention to detail with the finishing work. I am pretty sure that a bodyshop that repaints is supposed to sand off or atleast down the paint, and use a primer. I could be wrong but the lumps have very little to do with the colour...just a poor paint job.

That paint has shit in it, it's full of orange peel, it's not even shiny.

I bet you they just half ass sanded the parts, and sprayed a cheap single stage paint and not a base clear. Cause even my VERY FIRST paint job on a bumper using BC/CC turned out looking like a million bucks with only a couple mosquitos in it.

These parts cant be wetsanded and polished out. The orange peel looks like it's in the paint. Tell them to refund your cash and go somewhere else. that's fucking horrible. I paint outta my garage and can do 10x better.

I'll bring it to a detailing place and see what they can do.

I would like to bring it back to AAA to get it fixed but if they did a subpar job the FIRST time, who knows what'll happen the second time? I don't want to waste my time waiting again, just to get another mediocre job.

If it's possible to get rid of it through sanding and buffing, I'll get the whole car done (there's a lot of wear and tear scratches on it so might as well )

EDIT: Does anyone know a good, reputable detailing place that can help me out?

Yeah that's some bad orange peel paint job.

That's the same problem I had with United Autobody on 32nd. I had some white residue on my rear quarter panel and door and tons of overspray everywhere else so I brought it back, he wetsanded it and repainted the whole rear quarter panel within two days.
I brought it to screamin paintworks and Dave pointed out the runs that you can barely see in the light and some uneven paint. Horrible. It's barely noticeable, but damn I hate it.

Even though I didn't, I would bring it back to the shop and get him to look at it and fix it. Usually, they don't wanna mess up the second time around so you don't come back.
