Curious to see who here works in Oilsands? How long have you been and are you planning to move back home in the near future?
I have been in FMM for just over 1.5 years. Originally 6 months contract. Deciding if I am staying and if so, how long.

I did work in the oilsands for about 6 years at various sites including suncor, syncrude, muskeg river and long lake as an electrician. At first it was fun and the money was great but after a while that place really drags you down and i got tired of the people, crime, drugs, piss poor service and the 8 hour commute each way every 2 weeks. So i went back to school, graduated and landed a great job in the city that pays about 75% of what i made up north.
I must say, it was the best decision i have made.
Fort McMurray is the shittiest town ever...
Guess who's back... tell some men.
^ My dad agrees, he's been working there for a decade.

Thanks for the 14 years of LOLs. Govern yourselves accordingly and avoid uppercut reactions!

I look at what I had to sacrifice as far as my personal life goes while I worked up north and offshore for the couple years. For me it wasn't worth the money, and I'd pay 3 times what I made to be able to go back and have a "do-over".
This was my snapping moment that made me have enough, and I got the fuck out of the oilfield.

Yeah, probably not the best place for single guys. There are some family who are quite happy there. I am looking for the right type of work here, then I will make the move back for good. Could be 2 months, could be 4, or end of the year. Will see how things turn out the next little while.
I'd never raise a family there either.
Get your cash and get the fuck out is my opinion.
Fort McMurray should just shut down and become one big camp. I seriously fucking hate that city.

It would be a lot better if the single women to guy ratio is 4 to 1. It think it's pretty much 8 to 1 single guy to girl ratio. I meet more GOOD single women in Calgary one weekend than I have in FMM in 6 months.
My next contract will be in a town where single women out number men, no doubt!

Worked there for 2 years, made my money and got the fuck out. I dont regret working there, the workplace was great, but the town fucking sucked.
Now i live in edm, with the same job, nice house, and a better lifestyle..

FTMM, not everyone cup of tea. And 2 years is probably average assignment people can take. Trade people make good money. 7 months with overtime would clear $150 for sure. 1/4 mil if work a year straight.
I can't really live at a place where Montana is considered as fine dinning.

I spend 2-3 months a year up here then back to the south for the rest. It really sucks here. but I love the 45,000 i can make in 2-3 months... sets up the rest of my year.
It's not that bad.

What are you saying? If you were up there, you'd go gay for the stay?Originally posted by TACO.VIDAL
Theres gotta be a lot of homo activity going on up there.
Is the policy "what ever goes on in FMM, stays in FMM"?
