Bus driver finally charge from School bus Accident in the fall

The Calgary Police Service has concluded its investigation
into a fatal school bus collision that occurred last fall.
The crash happened on Thursday, October 17, 2007, at
approximately 8:30 a.m., in the southbound lanes of Crowchild
Trail, just north of 17 Avenue S.W.
Investigators believe the southbound school bus drifted into
the shoulder of the right-hand lane and struck the rear,
driver side of a parked gravel truck. The impact of the
collision sheared off the passenger side of the bus. It
appears the bus driver then lost control and hit a light
pole. The bus came to rest next to the pole.
The gravel truck was parked on the side of the road due to
mechanical issues.
All 11 children on board the 30-passenger bus suffered
various injuries, from critical to minor, and were
transported by EMS to Alberta Children’s Hospital.
Nine-year-old Kathelynn OCCENA succumbed to her injuries a
short time later in hospital.
Following an extensive investigation, which included
consultation with the Crown Prosecutor’s Office, the Calgary
Police Service Traffic Section has charged the bus driver
with several Traffic Safety Act offences.
Louise ROGERS, 40, is charged with unlawfully operating a
motor vehicle on a highway in a careless manner, unlawfully
driving a motor vehicle from one traffic lane to another when
such movement could not be made safely and unlawfully driving
a motor vehicle so as to cross a solid line when such
movement could not be made safely.
ROGERS was charged today, Tuesday, March 25, 2008.
Sgt. Doug McIlwraith of the CPS Traffic Section will be
available to speak with the media today. This availability
will take place at 3 p.m., on the third floor of the Andrew
Davison Building, 133 6 Ave. S.E.
