Default Calculating your UPS brokerage fee.

Now there's some confusion when people get billed for their package from UPS. Most people see this page: http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shi...clearance.html
and look at the chart and think "hey my package is worth $205, so my fee will be $40 at the door".

Well as in a previous post of mine I was wanting to get UPS to hold my package at the station. I went to the station itself today and asked if they could hold it for pickup when the truck came back in. The person said I'd have to call the 1800 number. Okay so I did, and got it held for tomorrow. But anyways got the lady to break down the brokerage fee for me, here it goes:

    My package is worth: $215

$40.30 - For the brokerage SERVICE fee from UPS

+$5.85 - Bond fee (it's 2.7% of your package value, min of $5.85. This is a fee for UPS paying Canada Customs your taxes in advance so they can import your package)

+$4.25 - For Collect on Delivery (They charge you for paying your UPS fees?????)

+ $12 or so in the ACTUAL 5% GST on my item.

For a total of $63 some dollars

Well there you have it... That's how your charges are broken down when you get Brown knocking on your door the next time demanding a ridiculus fee for your package.

VS USPS/Canada post which is $5 service fee + GST on your item value

I just refuse to have anything shipped by them, If the seller doesn't want to go USPS then he ain't making the sale.

I was expecting it to come via USPS after even asked if they could ship USPS. They said yes. Then I get my tracking number and it's for UPS

i have an easier way to calculate the UPS Robberage fee: (it's a flat rate, reguardless of the cost of the item)

    Bend over
    Take it dry

That's my policy verbatim. If seller won't ship USPS or even Fedex, I shop elsewhere.

Yes similar process for DHL, and FedEX. But they don't rape you nearly as bad.

Nice, why is USPS the shit vs. all these? I am a shipping newbie. I was thinking about getting some parts from the US off ebay, but knew about the on going rapeage and second guessed it.

USPS/Canada Post is "part" of the government. So I guess that's why the charges are not as bad.

Yes. If the seller marks the value of the package as $400. But if he marks it as say like $100, and it breaks or gets lost in shipping. You will only get refunded your 100-so dollars. And most shippers won't cause they can get in shit from customs for falsifying. And you may get charged extra duty as well because it's stainless steel and thats a comodity (spelling).

Only other option is shipping it to sweetgrass, montana and getting it from there, it's right past the border, but you still have to pay customs. anyone know the specifics on that?

If you live in Winnipeg or Vancouver. You can actually go to UPS when your package arrives and ask them to clear it yourself. They will give you the documents which you bring to the Canada Customs office and pay your taxes. Bring the stamped paper work back to UPS and get your package. But that does not work here because the UPS here is not a customs/international port?

If they only ship UPS and you HAVE to get the item through them. Get them to ship it express if possible, get a quote first tho. Because you don't have to pay brokerage once it gets here. The cost will probably end up being the same if not less than having it shipped Standard and paying the brokerage fees. That's why you don't hear nearly as many people complain about FedEx, because most of the packages shipped via FedEx are Express and not Ground. I work at fedex myself, but not in the CSR or Brokerage areas so I'm not 100% sure how this stuff goes down. I work in the sort/ramp area actually handling the packages.
