I think this should work out great. It's a pretty simple concept too. If pedestrians are walking, cars are stopped and vice versa.....

I figured it would improve things overall, because 90% of the time I spend at intersections downtown is taken up by waiting for someone on foot to cross the road so either I can turn or someone ahead of me can turn. It would be really nice if traffic could breeze thru the intersections without having to wait for pedestrians. I would happily sit through an all-red signal with the pedestrian scramble (as I think other cities/locales call it) going on, if it would free up time for traffic to do its thing when it has the green.

In the case of driving through red lights and pedestrians walking on greens, maybe that's just natural selection at work. If you wander out into a street with traffic zipping by in at least 2 directions, maybe you deserve what's coming to you...

If this works so well, they should do the same thing for cars. "When pedestrians are stopped, ALL vehicles are free to cross - any which way."

Some of the biggest cities in the world have these intersections and they work quite well.

Traffic in Calgary can't hold a candle to these cities..
