Well when i was driving from van -> calgary
the phone lost reception in a couple of places on the way.

but i'd say 80% of the time you'll have reception

GSM is fine unless you go into rural area of Alberta or really anywhere across Canada(rural). If you're on the #1 I'd assume you'd do alright. GSM covers most the world but it's not nearly as good as CDMA in Canada for rural/travelling.

    edit..
I just looked at that coverage map and it is crap for rural areas because I work oilfield and none of them ever get service where I do. Playing the point of a person being too lazy or their lack of financial resources to sue for coverage map like that. As I said going to BC on the #1 you should be fine.

Sorry been drinking tonight and bored. Looking into it more. The trick they play over CDMA(telus/bell) coverage is that they seem to offer the same. The problem is that you will most likely need a 3 or 5 watt booster which is very expensive ($400 wtih antenna/cables etc) to get that coverage. Telus/Bell generally cover what they say on their maps and you can extend their coverage on those maps with a booster. I've really never worked with anyone in the field on a rogers phone who got coverage in a LOT of those areas on the map. I guess in the end you'll be in BC before you know.. You'll be alright with a few hours of no service! I've used by CDMA booster in BC lots and my phone still has no bars where it should on the highway.

It depends on your phone too. If you have an old phone that can't access the 850MHz network you are quite restricted.
